Ackwei Named to USL League One Team of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, September 10, 2019) – USL League One announced on Tuesday that defender Wahab Ackwei has been named to the Team of the Week for Week 25. This is the fifth time Ackwei has received this honor this season.
 
Playing 180 minutes over the matches at North Texas SC and at home against Forward Madison FC, Ackwei played strong on both sides of the ball. Over the two matches, the Ghanian recorded four shots, having one of those blocked. In the match against Madison, he made 78 passes and completed 88.5 percent of those. Ackwei made seven clearances and had five interceptions in that same match, to go with his one clearance and six interceptions last Tuesday at North Texas.

The Kickers are back on the road Saturday night, making the cross country trip out to FC Tucson, September 21 for a 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff. USL League One Team of the Week – Week 25

GK – Brian Sylvestre, Forward Madison FC: Sylvestre recorded a six-save shutout and made 15 recoveries as the Flamingos took a 1-0 victory on the road against the Richmond Kickers on Saturday night.

D – Wyatt Omsberg, Forward Madison FC: Omsberg won 6 of 10 duels, completed 47 of 60 passes and made four clearances as Madison earned a shutout victory on the road against Richmond.

D – Evan Lee, Greenville Triumph SC: Lee won 9 of 11 duels, 6 of 7 aerials, made seven clearances and completed 25 of 32 passes to help Greenville earn a shutout victory against FC Tucson.

D – Wahab Ackwei, Richmond Kickers: Ackwei completed 69 of 78 passes, made seven clearances and won 3 of 3 tackles as the Kickers were narrowly edged out by Forward Madison FC. 

M – Arturo Rodriguez, North Texas SC: Rodriguez recorded two goals, one assist and was credited with nine chances created across two victories for NTSC that sealed the League One regular season title. 

M – Richard Danso, North Texas SC: Danso had one goal, one assist and completed 57 of 66 passes and 8 of 15 dribbles across North Texas’ pair of wins against Richmond and South Georgia.

M – Carlos Gomez, Greenville Triumph SC: Gomez scored a hat trick and had another five chances created in completing 20 of 26 passes overall in Greenville’s big victory against FC Tucson.

M – Rafael Mentzingen, Lansing Ignite FC: Mentzingen had one goal, one assist, made nine recoveries and completed 20 of 27 passes in Lansing’s 4-3 victory against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC.

F – Ronaldo Damus, North Texas SC: Damus had a hat trick in North Texas’ 4-0 midweek victory and then chipped in an assist as NTSC rallied past South Georgia Tormenta FC to clinch the League One regular season title.

F – Tumi Moshobane, Lansing Ignite FC: Moshobane continued his recent stellar form with a pair of goals that helped Lansing earn a 4-3 win against Chattanooga and clinch a place in the League One Playoffs.

F – Jordan Perruzza, Toronto FC II: Perruzza scored a pair of goals to lead Toronto to a 3-2 victory against Orlando City B on Friday night.

RICHMOND, Va. — (Saturday, September 14, 2019) — The Richmond Kickers (8-12-4) fell at home to Forward Madison FC (10-9-6) Saturday night at City Stadium. A goal six minutes into the match from Danny Tenorio was the difference to give the visitors the victory. 
 
Madison took the lead after six minutes from Danny Tenorio. Christian Diaz slotted the ball through for Josiel Nunez. He was able to get the cross off just before getting to the end line. The cross found Diaz, who needed to control the ball before getting his shot past Akira Fitzgerald. 
 
The Kickers nearly leveled the score in the 12th minute off a corner kick. Joe Gallardo played in the corner at the near post. Ivan Magalhães beat his mark to the ball, as his glancing header sail in front of goal and out for a goal kick. 
 
Ryley Kraft found an opening in the 23rd minute, but could not capitalize on the effort. Wahab Ackwei sent the ball ahead for Dennis Chin. The forward got a slight touch on the ball to put it into space for Kraft to run onto. He let the shot rip from the top of the Madison box, forcing a massive save from Brian Sylvestre. Chin pounced on the deflected save, putting his follow up shot wide of the target. 
 
Dennis Chin had his shot saved by the Madison keeper in the 28th minute. Wahab Ackwei again played the long ball ahead. Ryley Kraft controlled the ball and played quickly for Chin. The Jamaican turned and went for the shot that Sylvestre saved.
 
Joe Gallardo curled in a shot in the 50th minute that Sylvestre needed to save. Ivan Magalhães played the ball wide for Josh Hughes on the left wing. Hughes went for the short pass to Gallardo. He cut inside and found the space for a shot that bent on frame, only to be stopped by the Madison keeper.

Kickers Return Home to Host Madison Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. – (Friday, September 13, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers (8-10-4) are back at City Stadium this Saturday night to host Forward Madison FC (9-9-6) and Heritage Night, presented by RVAmigos. The gates open at a special time of 4:30 p.m. with live music from the band Rebolisso and Brazilian dancers. Dank Eats will be on hand with funky fresh pitas and gyros. The players will be wearing limited edition pregame jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, Conexciones and the Beta Gamma Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. This match will be the third and final meeting between Richmond and Madison this season, and the first trip to City Stadium for Madison. The Kickers took all three points in the first meeting August 10 at Breese Stevens Field. Daniel Jackson came into the match in the 66th minute, scoring the game winner just three minutes later. Madison returned the favor two weeks later when Christian Diaz scored in the 74th minute. 
 
Richmond will be looking to bounce back Saturday, coming off Tuesday night’s 0-4 road loss at the league leaders, North Texas SC. The home side went up after just seventeen seconds to start an eventual hat trick for Ronaldo Damus. Arturo Rodriguez added a fourth goal for NTSC, ensuring the victory at Toyota Stadium. 
 
Madison battled to a 1-1 draw at Breese Stevens Field against South Georgia Tormenta FC last Saturday night. Paulo Junior put the home side up 1-0 in the 24th minute as Madison looked to improve their playoff positioning. With ten minutes to go, Marco Micaletto leveled the score for Tormenta so both teams would be forced to share a point, a result that fell in favor of the Kickers.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Richmond: Forward Daniel Jackson (#9) was the one that unlocked the Forward Madison FC defense in the first meeting between the teams. The striker’s unassisted effort in the 69th minute delivered the game-winner as the Kickers left Wisconsin with a 1-0 victory. A nominee for USL League One Player of the Month in August, Jackson will look to replicate this high-flying form against the Mingos at home. Forward Joe Gallardo (#10) rediscovered his early-season form with a multi-goal effort at South Georgia Tormenta FC — including a goal that required the forward to dribble past multiple defenders, nutmeg the final one, and put the ball in the back of the net. Of course, Gallardo had a similar run in the first match against Forward Madison that was ultimately denied by the crossbar. If given space, expect Gallardo to convert this time around. Midfielder Braeden Troyer (#31) is coming off a performance against Greenville Triumph SC that earned the veteran a spot on the USL League One’s Team of the Week. The linchpin in the Richmond midfield was vital in suffocating Greenville’s build-up play in the center of the park, and, on the other end of the field, he delivered his first league goal in a Kickers uniform which decided the match in favor of the Reds. 

Madison: Midfielder Don Smart (#7) leads Madison in scoring with seven goals in 23 matches this season. He is second in the team in assists with four. Forward Paulo Junior (#11) is second in scoring for Madison with five goals this season. He leads the team in assists with five in 23 appearances and scored the game tying goal in their last match against Tormenta FC. Goalkeeper Brian Sylvestre (#92) has three clean sheets in 13 matches between the pipes this season. The native of Hollywood, Florida needed to make three saves Saturday night to preserve the point at home, bringing his season talley to 31.

FRISCO, Texas — (Tuesday, September 10, 2019) — The Richmond Kickers (8-11-4) fell on the road to the league leaders North Texas SC (15-5-5) at Toyota Stadium Tuesday night. A hat trick from Ronaldo Damus and a fourth from Arturo Rodriguez was enough to give the home side all three points. 
 
North Texas took the lead in just the first minute of the match from Ronaldo Damus. Richard Danso picked up control of the ball up the right wing. He whipped in a cross to find Damus making a run into the six yard box. He only needed to redirect the ball off a header and into the back of the net. 
 
Scott Thomsen nearly had a chance to get Richmond back on the board in the 16th minute. Mutaya Mwape looked up to find Thomsen making a run up the left wing. His first touch was a cross in trying to pick out Daniel Jackson. Brecc Evans was able to get a touch on the ball to put it just out of reach of Jackson. 
 
Akira Fitzgerald needed a massive save to keep Arturo Rodriguez from making it 2-0. Jacori Hayes was able to slip a pass through for Rodriguez, brining Fitzgerald off his line. He took a touch to his right trying to find space for a shot, but Fitzgerald tracked him well. Once he went for the shot, the Richmond keeper had enough of a touch to put it out for a corner kick. 
 
Ronaldo Damus doubled the lead for North Texas on a brace in the 30th minute. Bicou Bissainthe won the ball in the midfield and quickly played the ball for Arturo Rodriguez. He played a through ball for Damus, who took a touch around Wahab Ackwei and put his shot across the face of goal into the far post for his second of the night. 
 
Dennis Chin pounced on a loose ball and had his shot deflected just wide in the 43rd minute. Brecc Evans looked to play a ball back for Jimmy Maurer. Chin sensed it and was there to try for a quick shot as Maurer came off his line to cut off the angle, getting a touch on the ball to push it just wide. 
 
A massive save came for Richmond in the 51st minute. Richard Danso played in a cross that took a deflection off Maxi Rodriguez. The ball rolled into space for Ronaldo Damus to get a shot off. Akira Fitzgerald had the quick reaction save to push the ball off the crossbar. 
 
Mutaya Mwape forced a save out of Jimmy Maurer in the 58th minute. Ryley Kraft changed up the play to Charles Boateng on the right side. Boateng held up play as Mwape ran onto the ball and launched a shot that needed an acrobatic save from the North Texas keeper. 
 
Richmond were hard done in a sequence that saw five shots in the 62nd minute, none of which would find the back of the net. Charles Boateng got a touch into space out of the reach of Maurer. Before it reached the endline, he turned and laid the ball off for Mutaya Mwape to go for a shot that was saved by Maurer. Dennis Chin was in place to try for a shot that saved off the line by Brecc Evans. The ball rolled out for Scott Thomsen, going for a shot that sailed wide.  
 
North Texas would make it 3-0 in the 70th minute, this time from Arturo Rodriguez. Richard Danso sent in a cross for Ronaldo Damus. Not able to turn, Damus laid the ball off for Rodriguez, who went for the one time effort to find the back of the net. 
 
A fourth goal came for the home side seven minutes later. Arturo Rodriguez ran down a long ball all the way to endline. He looked to play it back for Jorge Almaguer. He could not get a clean touch on the ball putting it out of his reach. Ronaldo Damus ran onto the ball and turned for the quick shot the slipped under Akira Fitzgerald and into the goal.

Three Players Named to USL League One Team of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, September 10, 2019) – USL League One announced on Tuesday that goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald and defenders Ivan Magalhães and Braeden Troyer have been named to the USL League One Team of the Week for Week 24 after the 1-0 win over Greenville Tuesday night.
 
Fitzgerald made fives saves en route to his seventh shutout of the 2019 season. WIth that shutout, Fitzgerald is now tied for fourth in USL League One for shutouts and tied for second for saves with 57. 
 
Magalhães remained solid at the back for the Kickers, helping Fitzgerald to the shutout. The Brazilian recorded two clearances and interceptions to reduce the chances for Greenville. He also had 46 passes to lead all 
 
Troyer scored his first competitive goal for the Kickers in Saturday’s win. Just before halftime, Joe Gallardo served in a corner kick that found the head of Troyer. His shot hit the underside of the crossbar and into the goal for the game winner. He also recorded a passing accuracy of 87.9 percent from 33 passes. 

Richmond are in action tonight as they are on the road to face the league leaders, North Texas SC at 8:00 p.m. ET. This match will be available to stream live on ESPN+. GK – Akira Fitzgerald, Richmond Kickers: Fitzgerald recorded a five-save shutout as the Kickers earned a 1-0 victory against Greenville Triumph SC to keep their postseason hopes moving.
 
D – John Nelson, North Texas SC: Nelson scored once, completed 5 of 5 dribbled and 49 of 58 passes while also winning 11 of 14 duels in North Texas’ victory against Orlando City B.

Kickers Travel to North Texas Tuesday

RICHMOND, Va. – (Monday, September 9, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers (8-10-4) make the trip to the league leaders North Texas SC (14-5-5) Tuesday night at Toyota Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. ET and will be available live on ESPN+.
 
This match will be the third meeting between the two clubs this season, as North Texas has taken victory in the previous two meetings. North Texas traveled to City Stadium June 1, as the Kickers fell 0-3. The visitors took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a goal from Dante Sealy. Ricardo Pepi and David Rodriguez added to the score in the second half, both assisted by Sealy. The next match also came at City Stadium, this time a 2-0 win for North Texas. Thomas Roberts and Callum Montgomery scored within three minutes of each other to seal the second win in the series.
 
Richmond kept their playoff hopes alive Saturday night, taking a 1-0 win over Greenville Triumph SC. Just before halftime, Joe Gallardo served in a corner kick that found the head of Braeden Troyer. His shot hit off the crossbar and over the line for his first competitive goal. Akira Fitzgerald made five saves as he picked up his seventh shutout of the season, tying him for fourth overall in USL League One. 
 
North Texas clinched the first spot in the USL League One Playoffs after a 3-1 road win at Orlando City B Friday night. John Nelson scored in the 22nd minute as North Texas held onto a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. OCB tied the match up in the 53rd minute through Brandon John. Ronaldo Damus responded just a minute later to restore the lead for North Texas. He found the back of the net again in the 70th minute, converting from the penalty spot.

Richmond: Goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald (#1) recorded his seventh shutout of the 2019 USL League One season, tying him for fourth in the league. The veteran keeper has 57 saves this season, which ranks second in the league. Defender Eli Lockaby (#17) made two key passes and had two interceptions in the 1-0 victory over Greenville. The VCU product has a passing accuracy of 81.7 percent from 823 passes this season. Midfielder Josh Hughes (#7) had a massive goal line clearance to keep Greenville off the score sheet early in the match. He has two goals and two assists this season, including his first professional goal. 

North Texas: Forward Ronaldo Damus (#11) score two goals in the 3-1 win at Orlando City B Friday night. He leads the league in goals this season with 13 goals, three ahead of Jordan Perruzza of Toronto FC II. Midfielder Arturo Rodriguez (#10) has eight assists this season, the best in the league and only two ahead of Matt Bolduc. He played 90 minutes and had a passing accuracy of 90 percent in the OCB match. Goalkeeper Carlos Avilez (#1) made three saves in the win over OCB to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The Dallas native has nine shutouts this season, putting him tied for second overall in the league and just two ahead of Akira Fitzgerald.

RICHMOND, Va. — (Saturday, September 7, 2019) — The Richmond Kickers (8-10-4) defeated Greenville Triumph SC (9-7-7) Saturday night at City Stadium. Braeden Troyer scored his first regular season goal just before halftime to give Richmond all three points. With the victory, the Kickers were the first winners of the Bon Secours Cup. 

Josh Hughes came up with a massive goal line clearance in the 12th minute to keep the visitors off the board. Tyler Polak played a quick pass inside the Richmond box for Carlos Gomez. He was able to get enough of a touch on the ball to get it to JJ Donnelly, who could not get much on the shot as Hughes was there for the clearance. 

Dennis Chin nearly found the break through goal in the 35th minute. Eli Lockaby picked up control of the ball on the right wing. He whipped in a ball for Chin making a near post run. The Jamaican tried for a shot as it skipped just wide of the post. 

Braeden Troyer scored his first competitive goal for the Kickers in first half stoppage time. Off a corner kick from Joe Gallardo, Troyer rose above the crowd to get a head on the ball and ping it off the crossbar and over the line to put Richmond ahead 1-0 before halftime.

A chance came for second half substitute Mutaya Mwape in the 64th minute. Mwape switched up the play to get the ball over to Dennis Chin on the left wing. After some fancy footwork to create some space, Chin looked to play the ball back for Mwape making a run towards the far post. He was not able to get a clean touch on the ball, allowing Greenville to clear the ball away from danger. 

Mwape could have made it 2-0 for the Kickers in the 88th minute. After playing a give and go with Eli Lockaby, Mwape cut in towards the center of the field. He looked to sneak in a shot towards the near post that Miguel Uribe needed to push wide. 

The Kickers have a busy week ahead. First up, Richmond takes the trip to Toyota Stadium to face the first place North Texas SC Tuesday night for an 8:00 p.m. ET kickoff. The Kickers will be back at City Stadium next Saturday night to host Forward Madison FC and Heritage Night, presented by RVAmigos. The gates open at a special time of 4:30 p.m. with live music and Brazilian dancers. Dank Eats will be on hand with funky fresh pitas and gyros. The players will be wearing limited edition pregame jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. Kickers Host Greenville Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. – (Friday, September 6, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers (7-10-4) are set to host Greenville Triumph SC (9-6-7) at City Stadium Saturday night, plus it is Cider Fest, presented by Bon Secours. The gates open up at 5:30 p.m. with live music from the Back Seat Drivers. Happy Hour has been extended until 7:00 p.m., with all ciders and craft beers for only $3. This will mark the third and final meeting of the 2019 season between Richmond and Greenville. Both teams have claimed 1-0 victories at Greenville in the first two meetings. The Kickers picked up the first win on April 20 at Legacy Early College, as Joe Gallardo walked through the Greenville defense to score the lone goal of the match in the 49th minute. Greenville responded on May 18 when Jake Keegan chipped the ball over Akira Fitzgerald for the victory in the 42nd minute. 
 
Richmond is coming off their largest win of the regular season last Saturday night, picking up a decisive 4-1 road win at South Georgia Tormenta FC at Erk Russell Park. Tormenta jumped ahead in the fifth minute, with Mikie Rowe scoring from a free kick. The Kickers responded just six minutes later as Ivan Magalhães poked the ball away and into the path of Dennis Chin, as he went for the quick shot to level the score. Joe Gallardo added a second for Richmond in the 15th minute. Josh Hughes won the ball off Ricardo Gomez, allowing Gallardo to go on a run into space. With no one to pressure him, Gallardo launched a shot from about 35 yards out, arching it over Pablo Jara and into the back of the net. Matt Bolduc played a perfectly placed through ball for Chin to score the third goal of the night and his brace in the 36th minute. A brace would come in the 80th minute for Joe Gallardo when Greg Boehme headed the ball down for Gallardo. The former U.S. youth international proceeded to get past six defenders before going for the shot that found the back of the net to make it 4-1 for Richmond. 
 
Greenville picked up three points on the road as well back on August 28 at Breese Stevens Field, downing Forward Madison FC 1-0. Off a throw in from Tyler Polak, Aaron Walker continued moving the ball across the field for Christopher Bermudez. With two Madison defenders on him, Bermudez cut back towards the middle of the field before going for the shot that found the upper left corner of the goal and out of the reach of a diving Brian Sylvestre in the 42nd minute. Dallas Jaye made one save to pick up his league leading 12th shutout of the season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Richmond: Named the USL League One Player of the Week, forward Joe Gallardo (#10) scored a brace in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Tormenta FC. The former United States youth international has a team-high six goals in 21 matches this season. Midfielder Matt Bolduc (#11) found a spot in the USL League One Team of the Week after providing his sixth assist of the season to set up Dennis Chin’s second goal of the night with a long range through ball. Bolduc sits tied for second in the league with his six assists, only two behind the league leading Arturo Rodriguez of North Texas SC. Forward Dennis Chin (#15) was also named to Team of the Week after his brace in the victory over Tormenta FC. Chin is one goal behind Gallardo with five in 18 appearances this season. 

Greenville: Forward Jake Keegan (#9) leads Triumph SC with nine goals this season in 22 matches, tying him for second overall in USL League One. Keegan has also recorded one assist and 21 key passes this season. Midfielder Carlos Gomez (#10) leads Greenville with five assists this season, putting him in a five-way tie for fourth overall in USL League One. Gomez played the final ten minutes in their last outing against Forward Madison FC. Midfielder Christopher Bermudez (#7) scored the game winner for Triumph SC last Wednesday night against Madison. He has also made two assists over his 16 appearances for Greenville.

Daniel Jackson named a USL League One Player of the Month nominee

TAMPA, Fla. — (September 5, 2019) — Richmond Kickers forward Daniel Jackson was nominated by the USL League One for the Player of the Month award for the month of August.

Jackson was instrumental in aiding Richmond’s recent four-match unbeaten streak. The forward produced the go-ahead and only goal at Forward Madison FC as well as both of Richmond’s goals in its 2-2 draw against Toronto FC II.

Jackson’s second goal against Toronto was also nominated by the league as one of the goals of the month and can be voted on here.

Richmond’s no. 9 was deliberate with his contributions in the attack with all three of his shots on target finding the back of the net while placing 60 percent of his shots on frame.

Fans can vote on the USL League One’s website here. Voting will be open until 12 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 9.

In the meantime, fans can see Jackson and his teammates continue their push towards the playoffs when the team hosts Greenville Triumph SC on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available here.

Kickers Add Zach Perez

RICHMOND, Va. – (Thursday, September 5, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the signing of defender Zach Perez, pending USL League One and USSF approval. Perez will be available for selection Saturday night against Greenville Triumph SC. 
 
“Zach really stuck out in our friendly against Prep4Pro and during our midseason tryout,” said David Bulow, Kickers Head Coach. “We’ve always had success as a club with our open combines, and though getting some players in during the season was a bit of an experiment, we feel we have continued our tradition of finding quality players who are trying to break into the pro game.  Zach is very athletic and will give us some good cover at left back for the rest of the season.”
 
Signing his first professional contract, Perez joins the Kickers after four years at William Paterson University, where he was a two-time all conference choice. Perez made 59 appearances during his time in college, scoring three goals and adding three assists. The native of Edison, N.J. also appeared for FC Motown of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).
 
The Kickers return home to RVA Saturday, September 7 for their third and final clash with Greenville Triumph SC and Cider Fest, presented by Bon Secours.
