Magalhes Named USL League One Player of the Week

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, September 29, 2020) – USL League One announced on Tuesday that Ivan Magalhães has been named USL League One Player of the Week for Week 11. Ryley Kraft and Emiliano Terzaghi have earned spots on the Team of the Week as well. This is Magalhães’ first Player of the Week nod, and his second time this season on the Team of the Week. Kraft makes his third appearance, while this is Terzaghi’s fifth time being named on the Team of the Week. 
 
Magalhães had the match-winner last Saturday night on the road against Union Omaha. The defender recorded a game-high seven clearances combined with three recoveries to help the Kickers to their third cleansheet of the season. The Brazilian put in a strong defensive effort against Fort Lauderdale last Wednesday, with six clearances and four interceptions to go with nine recoveries. 
 
Kraft picked up two assists over the two matches last week. The first was setting up Terzaghi’s game-winner in the 54th minute off a corner kick. Overall, he had three chances created and five recoveries.
 
Terzaghi bagged a brace against Fort Lauderdale CF to lead the Kickers to a midweek home victory. The Argentine had six shots on target over both matches while recording seven recoveries and having a passing accuracy of 100 percent against Fort Lauderdale.  
 
The Kickers will be back in action next Saturday night, back at City Stadium hosting New England Revolution II, presented by Impawsible Pups. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and kickoff is at 6:30 p.m. The match will be shown live on WTVR CBS 6.3 and streaming on ESPN+. GK – Amal Knight, FC Tucson: Knight recorded 11 saves across two games for Tucson, including a nine-save performance in the club’s 2-1 victory against Forward Madison FC last Wednesday night.
 
D – Ivan Magalhães, Richmond Kickers: The Brazilian notched seven interceptions, 11 clearances and 12 recoveries across two victories for the Kickers in the week and scored the only goal in their 1-0 win against Union Omaha on Saturday night.
 
D – Evan Lee, Greenville Triumph SC: Lee won 6 of 8 duels, made two interceptions and completed 26 of 35 passes in a strong defensive performance by Triumph SC as the side took a 1-0 win against North Texas SC on Friday night.
 
D – Sami Guediri, Fort Lauderdale CF: Guediri was sharp on and off the ball in Fort Lauderdale’s two outings over the week, completing 72 of 79 passes and winning 12 of 16 duels while also recording four interceptions and 10 recoveries.

OMAHA, Neb. — (Saturday, September 26, 2020) — The Richmond Kickers (6-2-2) picked up their second-straight victory this week, downing Union Omaha (4-3-4) on the road at Werner Park Saturday night. Ivan Magalhães scored his second goal of the season in the 71st minute to combine with Akira Fitzgerald’s third shutout of the season for the Kickers to earn all three points on the road. 
 
Seven minutes into the match and Omaha nearly found the opener. Ethan Vanacore-Decker worked his way up the right side, playing a pass short to Elma N’for at the top of the Richmond box. He looked to try to sneak his shot inside the far post, but the ball rolled just wide. 
 
David Diosa came close to getting Richmond on the board after three straight corner kicks in the 26th minute. The first was cleared short for a second corner. This corner became the most dangerous of the three. Diosa curled in the corner towards the back post, as the ball looked to float in on target and forced Rashid Nuhu to punch the ball over the goal for the third corner kick. Omaha was able to finally clear the ball from danger after that corner was taken. 
 
Diosa nearly caught Nuhu off guard once again in the 41st minute. After winning the ball, Luke Pavone played the ball out to Diosa on the left wing. It looked like he was going to float a cross into the box for either Stanley Alves or Emiliano Terzaghi, instead the ball went just over the Omaha goal. 
 
Deep into first half stoppage time, Terzaghi came close to scoring. In a similar connection to Wednesday night’s win over Fort Lauderdale, Ian Antley found the space to pick out Terzaghi on a throw-in. The Argentine flicked a header towards goal, putting his shot just wide. 
 
Two minutes into the second half, Terzaghi tried to capitalize on an Omaha error. Illal Osumanu was looking to play the ball back to Nuhu, but his pass rolled into space. Terzaghi pounced on the loose ball. He went for a shot on frame as it ended up in the hands of Nuhu. 
 
Akira Fitzgerald was on his game in the 55th minute. Devin Boyce found some space about 25 yards from goal. He looked for the long range effort that Fitzgerald had it covered. N’for tried for a shot of his own, as the flag went up for the offside call. Fitzgerald had the shot covered regardless. 
 
Luke Pavone forced a save from Nuhu. Ryley Kraft knocked the ball down as Pavone was the one that could get control of the ball. He turned towards goal, but it looked like he did not get much on the shot and Nuhu came away with the ball. 
 
Richmond would finally break the deadlock in the 71st minute from a set piece. The referee blew the whistle for a foul after John Scearce came in with a hard challenge on Kraft, earning the Omaha midfielder a yellow card. Kraft came over to take the free kick. He curled in the free kick towards the back post. Ivan Magalhães rose above the crowd to head in his second goal of the season. 
 
Terzaghi wanted to double the Richmond lead in the 89th minute. Fitzgerald sprung Jonathan Bolanos on a run up the right wing. He laid the ball back for Terzaghi in the box. He lost his footing momentarily, but still managed Nuhu to come up big with a save.

Akira Fitzgerald was on his game in the 55th minute. Devin Boyce found some space about 25 yards from goal. He looked for the long range effort that Fitzgerald had it covered. N’for tried for a shot of his own, as the flag went up for the offside call. Fitzgerald had the shot covered regardless. 
 
Luke Pavone forced a save from Nuhu. Ryley Kraft knocked the ball down as Pavone was the one that could get control of the ball. He turned towards goal, but it looked like he did not get much on the shot and Nuhu came away with the ball. 
 
Richmond would finally break the deadlock in the 71st minute from a set piece. The referee blew the whistle for a foul after John Scearce came in with a hard challenge on Kraft, earning the Omaha midfielder a yellow card. Kraft came over to take the free kick. He curled in the free kick towards the back post. Ivan Magalhães rose above the crowd to head in his second goal of the season. 
 
Terzaghi wanted to double the Richmond lead in the 89th minute. Fitzgerald sprung Jonathan Bolanos on a run up the right wing. He laid the ball back for Terzaghi in the box. He lost his footing momentarily, but still managed Nuhu to come up big with a save.
 
The Kickers will be back in action next Saturday night, back at City Stadium hosting New England Revolution II, presented by Impawsible Pups. Preview: The Kickers Travel to Omaha Saturday

RICHMOND, Va. – (Friday, September 25, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers (5-2-2) will look to build on Wednesday night’s victory as they make the trip to face Union Omaha (4-2-4) this Saturday at Werner Park. Kickoff for this match is set for 8:00 p.m. ET and it will air live on WTVR CBS 6.3 (Comcast 206, Verizon FiOS 466) and streaming on ESPN+. 
 
This Saturday will be the first-ever meeting between the two sides, and their only clash this season. Omaha is in their first season in USL League One after being awarded a franchise on May 2, 2019. They are led by former University of Nebraska Omaha Men’s Soccer Head Coach Jay Mims and currently sit in fourth in the league standings, one spot behind the Kickers. 
 
Richmond has a quick turnaround for Saturday’s match after picking up a 2-1 victory at City Stadium Wednesday night over Fort Lauderdale CF. The visitors jumped out in front after just five minutes through Ricky Lopez-Espin. Despite missing a penalty in the 8th minute, Emiliano Terzaghi made good, scoring the equalizer in the 17th minute off a quick throw in from Ian Antley. The Argentine came up with a brace in the 54th minute off a corner kick from Ryley Kraft to pull Richmond ahead and earn the win. 
 
Omaha comes into this match on the heels of a two-match losing streak, falling to New England Revolution II last Saturday. Justin Rennicks made it 1-0 to the visitors in the 11th minute from a service from Orlando Sinclair. Heading into stoppage time, Omaha were dealt a blow when Ethan Vanacore-Decker was issued a straight red card, reducing them to 10-men for the final moments of the match. That red card has been rescinded by the league Disciplinary Committee and he will be available for Saturday’s match. New England would get a late insurance goal from Nicolas Firmino in the final seconds for them to seal their road victory.

Forward Emiliano Terzaghi (#32) continues to keep his spot at the top of the USL League One Golden Boot race after netting a brace Wednesday night against Fort Lauderdale. He has nine goals in nine matches, plus he is tied for second in shots taken with 25. Defender Kyle Venter (#12) made his ninth appearance of the season in Wednesday night’s victory. He had three recoveries and four clearances in the win. Defender Ian Antley (#2) picked up his third assist of the season for Terzaghi’s tying goal Wednesday night. He led the team with seven tackles and five recoveries to show his strengths on both sides of the ball. 

Union Omaha

Forward Ethan Vanacore-Decker (#7) is tied for a club high two goals and leads the team with four assists this season. He spent a season and a half with USL Championship side Swope Park Rangers before signing with Omaha before the 2020 season. Goalkeeper Rashid Nuhu (#24) is tied for second in the league this season for shutouts with three. Nuhu came to Omaha after playing in four matches with New York Red Bulls II in 2019. Forward Evan Conway (#11) is tied with Vanacore-Decker in scoring with two goals this season. Conway is in his first professional season after four seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, scoring 27 goals in 77 appearances.

Marshall Honored with Avery Spence Award

RICHMOND, Va. – (Thursday, September 24, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers and the Spence family were pleased to honor Sydney Marshall with the 2020 Avery Spence Youth Community Service Award during halftime at the Kickers pro game versus Fort Lauderdale CF Wednesday night.  Established to honor Kickers youth player, Avery Spence, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident on May 1, 2011, the Avery Spence Youth Community Service Award was presented to Marshall by the Spence family based on criteria including exemplary volunteer involvement, commitment, leadership and athletic and academic achievements.
 
A member of the Richmond Kickers and Richmond United programs since the age six, Sydney has been an incredible teammate throughout her career. “I remember first meeting Sydney at Collegiate’s Robins Campus on field 7 for an ADP session, and she came right up and asked if she could help me set up for the session. I knew at that moment that Sydney had a heart for service, and we all admire her commitment through her high school years working to make RVA stronger. I know Avery would be pleased to see Sydney receive this award,“ said Rob Ukrop.
 
As a four year member of the Deep Run varsity soccer and track teams, Sydney was a vital member before suffering an ACL tear her junior year. She battled back from her injury to captain Deep Run her senior year which was cut short due to Covid. “Two qualities were highly evident when Sydney was a Deep Run soccer player: she was a ‘Team first’ player, and she was ‘coachable.’ Sydney missed her entire junior season with a torn ACL, yet she was a true team leader in training and at every game. Her physical presence was missed on the field, yet her emotional support from the sideline helped lead her team to the State championship game. As a team Captain her senior year, Sydney continued to crave coaching and learning, always wanting to improve.  She is a cornerstone in the legacy of the Deep Run women’s soccer program” said Steve Chapman, head coach of Deep Run. 
 
As a student, Sydney was an all “A” Honor Roll recipient all four years as a member of the AP Capstone program at Deep Run High School. She was a member of the National Honors Society, Spanish National Honors Society and Mu Alpha Theta (Mathematics National Honors Society).  Sydney was Vice President of National Beta Club, coordinator of events for FCA, and Leader for SODA. She passed the AAPPL test for national recognition of being bilingual in both Spanish and English language. Sydney was the Light of Hope recipient, awarded to one student with exemplary service to the community or overall contributions to others. 
 
While Sydney’s athletic and academic accomplishments are impressive, her volunteer work and commitment to others is unparalleled. She was a Wildcat Mentor Council member, a member of DECA, Interact club, Key club, FCCLA, and the Red Cross Club. Sydney volunteered with the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Richmond, the Richmond SPCA, and St. Michael’s Church. She was a Night to Shine participant and shared her love of soccer as a volunteer soccer coach at Shady Grove YMCA. Throughout high school, Sydney volunteered over 150 hours. 
 
Sydney is attending the University of Virginia this fall. She is the daughter of Rob and Heather Marshall and big sister to Macy, Lexy and Watson.   
 
About the Avery Spence Youth Community Service Award
Richmond Kickers Chairman, Rob Ukrop presented the inaugural Avery Spence Youth Community Service award to the Spence family on July 8, 2011, to honor the memory of Kickers youth player Avery Spence and her commitment to the Richmond community.  A longstanding member of the Richmond Kickers youth club, she started with the Kickers rec program when she was nine years old, progressing with arguably the best girls team in the Kickers Girls Elite program over seven seasons.  A committed volunteer, Avery donated countless hours throughout the Richmond community, was in the academic top ten in her class at Manchester High School and was heading to Virginia Tech in the fall to pursue a career in dentistry.  Avery had a love for life, sharing her time and talent with kids of all ages. Past award recipients include former Kickers players Ashley Riefner (University of Richmond), Blayne Fink (Virginia Tech),  Peter Coiley (Virginia Tech), Blake Cashin (VMI), Sawyer Gaffney (Davidson), Shaan Sharma (William and Mary), Caelan Colaiacovo (Coker College) and Emma Muir (Randolph Macon).

Kickers Match Against Orlando Rescheduled for October 7

RICHMOND, Va. — (Wednesday, September 23, 2020) — The Richmond Kickers (5-2-2) picked up their fifth win of the season, defeating Fort Lauderdale CF (3-5-2) 2-1 at City Stadium Wednesday night. Ricky Lopez-Espin gave the visitors an early lead after five minutes. Emiliano Terzaghi scored his eighth and ninth goals of the season to give Richmond all three points at home. 
 
Fort Lauderdale pulled ahead after just five minutes. Brian Rosales floated the ball into the Richmond box. Ian Fray finally controlled the ball on the endline. He found enough space for a slight chip to Lopez-Espin, who redirected into the goal for the opener. 
 
Richmond earned a penalty just three minutes later. Ryley Kraft had the subtle touch ahead for Terzaghi to go on a run towards goal. Right as he got into the Fort Lauderdale box, Fray came in with the challenge from behind, forcing the referee to point to the spot. The Argentine stepped up for the ensuing penalty kick, putting his shot just to the right of the goal. 
 
A quick-thinking play nearly gave the Kickers an equalizer in the 17th minute. Ian Antley saw that Terzaghi was in a good spot just beyond the Fort Lauderdale defense as he went for the fast throw in. Terzaghi then played the ball across the face of goal as David Diosa came in at the back post, putting his shot just wide of the frame. 
 
The Kickers found the breakthrough in the 26th minute. In a play almost similar to the play in the 17th minute, Ian Antley took a quick throw-in to find Terzaghi. Instead of looking for a pass, he arched in a shot that stunned the Fort Lauderdale defense for the equalizer. 
 
Ryley Kraft connected with Terzaghi in the 54th minute for his brace. Mutaya Mwape found space up the left wing, going for a shot to the near post and forcing Dylan Castanheira to push the ball wide for a corner kick. Kraft came over for the corner kick, serving in a ball that found the head of Terzaghi. He made no mistake to find the back of the net. 
 
Akira Fitzgerald came up with a massive goalline save in the 72nd minute. Sami Guediri stood over a free kick opportunity about 20 yards from goal. He put his shot on target looking at the near post, upper 90. Ftizgerald made sure to get his hands in the way to punch the ball away.

The Kickers play their second match in three days this Saturday, this time on the road as they head out west to take on Union Omaha in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Kickoff for this match is set for 8:00 p.m. ET and it will air live on WTVR CBS 6.3 and streaming on ESPN+.
