The game started off as a tense battle in the midfield with the Kickers absorbing the attacking pressure presented by the Red Wolves. After 28 minutes, the Red Wolves were awarded a free kick outside of the Kickers’ penalty box which would become the most dangerous play of the first half. Blake Frischknecht’s placed kick went straight into the hands of Akira Fitzgerald with ease. In the 43rd minute, the Red Wolves sent in a ball from the wing that would fall right in front of Fitzgerald, but Juan Pablo Monticelli was quick to clear the ball.
After a scoreless first half, the Kickers changed up the dynamic of the forward line with Stanley Alves replacing Hernan Gonzalez. The Kickers would find their opening goal two minutes into the half by replicating their defensive success from the first half.
Chattanooga started their attack up the right wing, but they were shortly dispossessed by Monticelli. Emiliano Terzaghi would get to the loose ball first and play a one-two with Anderson who raced up the left side. The reigning MVP played the St. Vincent forward on, and Anderson cut the ball inside near the end line before placing a curling effort that ricocheted off a Chattanooga defender and into the back of the net.
In the 53rd minute, Ricardo Ruiz leveled the scoreline with a header into the goal, leaving the game 1-1. Chattanooga got the ball into the danger area as José Carrera-Garcia flicked the ball up before Fitzgerald could close it down, and Ruiz would finish on the back post.
The Kickers attacking output would continue to work through Anderson on the left wing whose blistering speed was wreaking havoc on Chattanooga’s right flank. Meanwhile, around the 77th minute, Chattanooga on the front foot sent a ball into the air towards the Kickers’ goal, but Fitzgerald lept into the air to punch it away from the box.
After a free kick was awarded to Chattanooga, Juan Galindrez, in the 83rd minute, was able to finish off a shot in the Kickers box to see the Red Wolves take the lead late in the game.
Just five minutes later, Richmond would send a ball into the Red Wolves’ box for Ivan Magalhães to head past goalkeeper Sebastian Mora-Mora. However, Mora-Mora would collect the shot on goal and deny Richmond’s final attempt at an equalizer.

The Rise to the Occasion Match Preview is presented by Great Harvest Bread Co.
Jalen Crisler (#15) played a crucial role in another Richmond clean sheet. He made seven clearances, one interception, and gained possession four times. Having just slotted into the squad this very season, Crisler has adapted quite well. He also had the most touches (73) and led the team in total aerial duels (6) with a win percentage of 66.7 percent.
Nil Vinyals (#10) started his third straight game since joining the Kickers and scoring a goal against Fort Lauderdale. Vinyals had a passing accuracy of 81.4% and a 74.2% passing accuracy into the opposition’s half. He made five key passes and gained possession eight times from the middle of the pitch.
Matt Bolduc (#7) was all over City Stadium against NCFC. Registering two shots and one on target, he was a nuisance for their defense. Bolduc made three key passes, one good open cross and made four interceptions. Despite hitting the woodwork and having a shot blocked early on in the game, Bolduc was an essential piece in the Richmond attack and will look to convert his next shots into goals.
Josue España (#10) has scored three goals this season, leading the Red Wolves in goals scored. He had an 87.9% passing accuracy against Fort Lauderdale and an 85.2% passing accuracy into the opposition’s half. España scored a brace against New England and is a prominent attacking presence.
Jason Ramos (#17) was also on the scoresheet against Fort Lauderdale. He maintained an 89.8% passing accuracy, 85.7% passing into the opposition’s half and won 100% of his duels. Ramos stands out in the midfield as not only an attacking player but a defensive piece as well with three tackles and seven gained possessions.
Jimmie Villalobos (#34) scored a goal against North Texas and assisted España for one of his goals against Fort Lauderdale. The midfield playmaker had a passing accuracy of 89.5% against Fort Lauderdale, he also made three key passes and blocked one shot.
RICHMOND, Va. – USL League One announced on Monday that Richmond Kickers goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald and Jalen Crisler were named to the Team of the Week for Week 7 following Saturday’s draw against North Carolina FC.
Fitzgerald tallied his third clean sheet of the season Saturday — tied for first in the league. Another vintage performance between the pipes by the veteran saw him tally four saves, one clearance, and, most dramatically, one duel won as he sacrificed his body to snuff out an NCFC goal-scoring opportunity late in the first half. This is the second team of the week selection for Akira Fitzgerald in 2021.
Making his first appearance of 2021 in the league’s team of the week, Crisler was composed as always in the central defense. He denied the North Carolina build-up throughout the match as he won two-thirds of his aerial duels, recorded seven clearances, one tackle and one interception. Furthermore, his own distribution was crucial in the Richmond build-up as he completed 88.3% of his passes.
After three weeks in Richmond, the Kickers are back on the road this Saturday, May 29 at Chattanooga Red Wolves SC. Kickoff for that match is set for 7 p.m. The Kickers return home to face New England Revolution II on Saturday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for that match are available at https://www.richmondkickers.com/tickets.
USL League One Team of the Week – Week 7
GK – Akira Fitzgerald, Richmond Kickers: Fitzgerald kept a four-save clean sheet to help Richmond earn a point on Saturday night against North Carolina FC, including an excellent first-half denial of NCFC forward Selmir Miscic’s close range effort.
D – Themi Antonoglou, Toronto FC II: Antonoglou was everywhere for TFC II on Saturday night. He picked up the assist on McLaughlin’s game-winning goal, led all players in the match with four chances created, and made two successful tackles to round off a solid performance.
D – Tyler Polak, Greenville Triumph SC: Polak won seven duels while passing at an 84 percent success rate, playing a key role in Greenville’s clean sheet win.
D – Jalen Crisler, Richmond Kickers: Crisler put in an excellent defensive shift to prevent a hungry North Carolina FC attacking unit from finding the net. He made seven clearances, won five duels and passed at an 88 percent success rate on the night.
D – Malick Mbaye, North Carolina FC: Mbaye was a big reason why the Kickers struggled to create on Saturday. He won 6 of 7 duels, made seven clearances, and completed 89 percent of his 80 attempted passes.
M – Jay Tee Kamara, North Carolina FC: Kamara was at the heart of everything for NCFC, providing the team with a spark going forward. He led all players in the match in a number of key categories, including dribbles completed (nine), chances created (seven), and duels won (10).
M – Jason Ramos, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: Ramos scored the game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time to give the Red Wolves a dramatic 2-1 win over Fort Lauderdale CF on the team’s return home to CHI Memorial Stadium. He also passed at a 90 percent success rate and completed two tackles.
M – Don Smart, Greenville Triumph SC: On a night where Triumph SC struggled to create for long stretches, Smart proved to be the difference between one point and three. In addition to his assist on Marios Lomis’ goal, he created four chances overall, completed two dribbles and passed at an 84 percent success rate.
F – Garrett McLaughlin, Toronto FC II: TFC II registered only 35 percent possession in its win over North Texas, and as such, McLaughlin didn’t compile a ton of touches. But he made the ones that he did get count, recording all of his team’s three total shots on target and scoring with two of them.
F – Marios Lomis, Greenville Triumph SC: Though he was on the fringes of the action for much of the match, like all good strikers, Lomis came through when it mattered most. The Greenville forward’s terrific curling strike resulted in the game’s only goal and a win for his side, Lomis’ league-leading fifth goal of the season.
F – Josue España, Chattanooga Red Wolves SC: España continued his fine run of form on Saturday, scoring Chattanooga’s first goal on the night – his third in the last two games. He created one additional chance in the match as well.

RICHMOND, Va. — (Saturday, May 22, 2021) — The Richmond Kickers (2-2-1) closed out the night with a scoreless draw at City Stadium against North Carolina FC (0-2-1). Akira Fitzgerald and the defense earned their second-straight clean sheet and their third of the season.
The Kickers were denied an early opening goal in the eighth minute after a strike by Matt Bolduc fizzed into the side goal post and rolled out. Approximately 24 minutes into the match, Nil Vinyals made an impressive tackle in the center of the pitch, passed it off to Matt Bolduc, who switched the ball to the left side for Jonathan Bolanos, who fired off a shot but was also denied by the woodwork.
Possibly the clearest cut opportunity of the first half came from a precision-placed through ball by Matt Bolduc over the top of the North Carolina center halves which landed at the feet of Jonathan Bolanos. The forward fired a shot past NCFC keeper, Jake McGuire, but the shot went just wide off the post and the halftime score remained 0-0.
After a scoreless first half, the Kickers sought the go-ahead opportunity and took another eight shots at the goal. With the entrance of Oalex Anderson at the 66th minute on the left wing, he provided a surge of pacey play that opened up several opportunities to convert a goal.
Around the 66th minute, Nil Vinyals standing over a direct free kick, sent the ball into the box for Oalex to finish with a header, but the NCFC keeper was there to deflect it away from the net. Nonetheless, the defensive line and keeper were solid in the back and Akira Fitzgerald had a spectacular outing with four saves and helped add to another Richmond clean sheet for the season.
The Kickers return to action on Saturday, May 29 when they travel to Chattanooga to take on the Red Wolves. Kickoff for that match is set for 7:00 p.m.
