The game started off as a tense battle in the midfield with the Kickers absorbing the attacking pressure presented by the Red Wolves. After 28 minutes, the Red Wolves were awarded a free kick outside of the Kickers’ penalty box which would become the most dangerous play of the first half. Blake Frischknecht’s placed kick went straight into the hands of Akira Fitzgerald with ease. In the 43rd minute, the Red Wolves sent in a ball from the wing that would fall right in front of Fitzgerald, but Juan Pablo Monticelli was quick to clear the ball.
After a scoreless first half, the Kickers changed up the dynamic of the forward line with Stanley Alves replacing Hernan Gonzalez. The Kickers would find their opening goal two minutes into the half by replicating their defensive success from the first half.
Chattanooga started their attack up the right wing, but they were shortly dispossessed by Monticelli. Emiliano Terzaghi would get to the loose ball first and play a one-two with Anderson who raced up the left side. The reigning MVP played the St. Vincent forward on, and Anderson cut the ball inside near the end line before placing a curling effort that ricocheted off a Chattanooga defender and into the back of the net.
In the 53rd minute, Ricardo Ruiz leveled the scoreline with a header into the goal, leaving the game 1-1. Chattanooga got the ball into the danger area as José Carrera-Garcia flicked the ball up before Fitzgerald could close it down, and Ruiz would finish on the back post.
The Kickers attacking output would continue to work through Anderson on the left wing whose blistering speed was wreaking havoc on Chattanooga’s right flank. Meanwhile, around the 77th minute, Chattanooga on the front foot sent a ball into the air towards the Kickers’ goal, but Fitzgerald lept into the air to punch it away from the box.
After a free kick was awarded to Chattanooga, Juan Galindrez, in the 83rd minute, was able to finish off a shot in the Kickers box to see the Red Wolves take the lead late in the game.
Just five minutes later, Richmond would send a ball into the Red Wolves’ box for Ivan Magalhães to head past goalkeeper Sebastian Mora-Mora. However, Mora-Mora would collect the shot on goal and deny Richmond’s final attempt at an equalizer.
