Kickers Announce City Stadium Upgrades

RICHMOND, Va. – (Friday, March 29, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers launch their 27th season this weekend at City Stadium, featuring new upgrades and hospitality areas in the nearly century old stadium.

“This is my third year managing the Stadium and I am thrilled about the new improvements and investment,” said Scott McGuire, Stadium General Manager. “From what I know, these are the first major upgrades to City Stadium since the mid 1990’s. We want City Stadium to be a singular venue for Carytown and RVA to host pro soccer and other community gatherings such as RVA Field Day, Sunday Farmer’s Markets, running clubs, festivals, corporate family days and much more.”

The league consisting of ten teams will compete in a single table during the inaugural 2019 season, with the league’s regular season consisting of 28 games beginning March 30 for the Kickers Home Opener against Lansing Ignite FC.

City Stadium to Host Mallory Pugh and the Washington Spirit March 16

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, February 19, 2019) – City Stadium is slated to host the National Women’s Soccer League’s (NWSL) Washington Spirit as they take on James Madison University Saturday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. In partnership with the Richmond Strikers, the match will serve as the marquee game during the weekend’s prestigious Jefferson Cup Girls Weekend, which will host more than 5,000 players and 350 participating teams. Tickets will be $15 until March 7 then $20 March 8 to game day, plus a $1.50 convenience charge if ordered online at www.richmondkickers.com. This match will be included with 2019 Season Ticket packages (except Family Passes).

As Washington prepares for the upcoming 2019 NWSL season that kicks off the weekend of April 13-14 and on the heels of the U.S. Women’s National Team competing in the SheBelieves Cup, fans in Richmond will have the opportunity to watch some of the best female professional players in the world, including multiple U.S. Women’s National Team members and other international stars, compete at City Stadium.

Washington boasts one of the league’s most exciting young rosters, including 2017 NWSL Rookie of the Year Finalist and U.S. international forward Mallory Pugh, 2018 NWSL overall number one draft pick and U.S. international midfielder Andi Sullivan and U.S. international midfielder Rose Lavelle.

“Our game in Richmond last year during the Jefferson Cup was a huge success. At the time, it drew the biggest crowd to ever see us play other than the 2016 NWSL Championship,” said Chris Hummer, Washington Spirit President. “With the World Cup this year adding to the buzz, we know this is another great opportunity. The exhibition will be the second year in a row that a professional women’s team has played at City Stadium. Previously, City Stadium hosted the Spirit taking on the North Carolina Courage March 17, 2018, U.S. Women’s National Team exhibitions against South Korea on November 1, 2008, Iceland on October 8, 2006, and Brazil on September 20, 1998.

Kickers Announce 2019 Preseason Schedule

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, January 29, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the 2019 Preseason Schedule, with a slate of six games kicking off February 16.

“The combination of it being nearly four months since the last time I was on the field coaching and watching the 2019 roster start to take shape, I am getting very excited for the beginning of preseason,” said Kickers Head Coach David Bulow. “Having been appointed the new head coach in the middle of the season last summer, it felt a little bit like I was trying to jump on a treadmill that was running at full speed! I’m really looking forward to take the time build a team thats competitive and entertaining, one that the Richmond area soccer community will be proud to watch.”

The first match of the 2019 Preseason is set for Saturday, February 16 as the Kickers host the first of two match ups against Virginia Commonwealth University. Six days later, the Kickers will travel to Leesburg, Va. to face USL Championship side Bethlehem Steel FC. The Kickers return to RVA March 3 to host Old Dominion University and Kickers legend and now ODU assistant coach William Yomby.

Highlighting the 2019 Preseason Schedule, the Kickers will open up City Stadium to host NCAA powerhouse University of Virginia. Tickets will be $5 and available soon on www.richmondkickers.com. The gates will open at 3:00 p.m. with food trucks and craft beer on tap! Kickoff for that match is set for 4:00 p.m.

Closing out preseason, the Kickers will host 2018 NCAA Elite Eight participant James Madison University March 17. The final match will be the second meeting against VCU March 23. Both of those matches will be hosted at Ukrop Park.

Kickers Partner with Spiideo

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, January 8, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce an exciting new partnership with Spiideo to provide video recording and analysis for the club at City Stadium.

“I am extremely excited to utilize the Spiideo camera system for the 2019 season,” said Kickers Head Coach David Bulow. “It’s an example of many improvements. It will be the most important coaching tool for me and our coaching staff and I’m confident it will lead to exciting, entertaining, winning soccer from the Richmond Kickers.”

Spiideo makes advanced sports video recording and analysis easy and accessible for coaches, analysts and players. When using the Spiideo system there is no longer a need for manual camera handling, no camera man, no hassle with cables and files. The Spiideo Virtual Panorama technology captures both overview of the entire field, as well as details of individual players in the same recording using 4k cameras from multiple angles.The system then enables coaches to analyze and provide live feedback to players, as well as tag, draw, create presentations and collaborate with the team.

“The top of Coach David Bulow’s list of improvements for the season was to add Spiideo to City Stadium,” added Kickers President Matt Spear. “It will help the players improve and enable the team to reach peak performances. Based in Malmo, Sweden, Spiideo’s solutions are today adopted by first teams and academies in hundreds of clubs all over the world. However, while used by some of the world’s largest and most well known clubs in top leagues like Premier League, Serie A, MLS, USL etc. the system is cost efficient and suitable also for smaller clubs with more limited resources. Kickers Announce Slagle as Vice President for Community Engagement and Gameday Experience

RICHMOND, Va. – (Thursday, January 3, 2018) – The Richmond Kickers are excited to announce Charlie Slagle as the Vice President for Community Engagement and Gameday Experience of the Richmond Kickers Pro Soccer Team.

“I am excited to join the new group that will enhance the Richmond Kickers franchise,” said Slagle. “From the ownership group led by some of my former players at Davidson College, including Rob Ukrop, to Matt Spear, to Scott Sutton and the current staff, I look forward to the new Richmond Kickers and improved City Stadium.”

Most recently, Slagle served as the Tampa Bay United Soccer Club CEO starting in March 2016. He was previously the Executive Director of the Colorado Rapids Youth Soccer Club in Denver, Co. Prior to that, Slagle was the CEO of the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) in Raleigh, N.C. for more than 12 years.

“Charlie’s energy, infectious personality, and decades of experience are a vital step forward for our Kickers Pro organization,” commented Kickers President Matt Spear. “Charlie has directed several big, high profile clubs – most recently Tampa Bay United which also converged with a USL team, the Rowdies. His earlier club executive positions overlapped Colorado Rapids (MLS) and NCFC (USL Championship). Charlie will be an integral face of our organization and will be massive in deepening our community relations. He’s a remarkable bridge builder, an ardent advocate for the civc impact of soccer and a ‘people person’ – Charlie is an encyclopedia of names and relationships. A former Head Coach of the Davidson Wildcats for 21 years, Slagle coached the team from 1980-2000, with players who are the principals in our 22 Holdings ownership group and Team President Matt Spear. He led the team to a Final Four finish in 1992, and was named the NCAA Division I Coach of the Year that same year. He was also named the Southern Conference Coach of the Year seven times and the United Soccer Coaches Regional Coach of the Year on two occasions. In his roles at Davidson and CASL, he hosted 14 NCAA Division I College Cups and hosted the last training camp for the for the US men’s national team prior to the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups.

Slagle is a member of the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame and the Davidson College Athletics Hall of Fame. He has served as the President of the United Soccer Coaches from January 2017 through January 2018. The United Soccer Coaches is the largest coaching association in the world with over 30,000 members.

Richmond Kickers Announce New Ownership

RICHMOND, Va. – (Tuesday, December 18, 2018) – The Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club is pleased to announce 22 Holdings, LLC as the new majority owner of the Richmond Kickers Pro Team. 22 Holdings, LLC, a group of former Davidson College soccer teammates led by Rob Ukrop, is finalizing the terms of the deal which is scheduled to close by the end of 2018. The Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club will continue to hold a minority share in the team.

“22 Holdings is excited to invest in the Richmond Kickers, and we are thrilled to lead the club into USL League One in 2019,” commented Ukrop. “Former Kickers goalkeeper and minority investor, Alex Deegan, shares, ‘the creation of 22 Holdings came about in 2017 when Davidson College hosted a 25 year reunion for our 1992 Division 1 NCAA Final Four soccer team – a powerful reminder of team, mission, and the impact of soccer on each players’ life. The journey impacted a community for years to come. This collection of memories served to ignite an idea that this team could again harness the team’s collective skill set to build and impact a project – one that would bring old teammates together around a common goal – and with that 22 Holdings was born.’ Currently, 22 Holdings is composed of 6 members of Davidson’s 1992 Final Four team, and we are thrilled that our captain, Matt Spear, will lead us as our new Team President.”

Established in 1993, the Richmond Kickers pro team has consistently been one of the most successful professional soccer clubs in America. Over 26 seasons, Richmond has qualified for postseason play 22 times. Richmond’s eight previous league Championship appearances (1995, 1996, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010) include winning the Premier League title in 1995, a shoot-out loss to Seattle in the USL First Division final in 2005, taking the USL Second Division crown against Charlotte in 2006 and again in 2009, and narrowly missing out on the championship against the Charleston Battery in 2010. In addition to on-field success, the Kickers have taken United Soccer Leagues Organization of the Year honors on five occasions (1995, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2009).

The Richmond Kickers Pro Team will guided by newly-appointed President, Matt Spear. Announced on December 6, Spear will take over the reigns as the Kickers prepare for the inaugural season in the USL League One in 2019, kicking off March 30 at City Stadium.

Spear has led the men’s soccer program at his alma mater, Davidson College, for the last 18 years. His NCAA Division I head coaching tenure included ten wins over ACC teams such as Virginia, Virginia Tech, Duke, and North Carolina. He also led the development for the $2 million Alumni Stadium. Before coaching, Spear had a successful sports marketing career including co-founding initiatives such as a college soccer broadcast series, several soccer websites and projects with adidas America, US Youth Soccer, and United Soccer Coaches. Spear was a Captain of Davidson’s 1992 Final Four Team.

The Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club will continue under the leadership of the Board of Directors, with John Brooks being appointed as the new President of the Board.

The Kickers will compete in the inaugural season of the 10-team USL League One, which includes Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, FC Tucson, Forward Madison FC, Greenville Triumph SC, Lansing Ignite FC, North Texas SC, Orlando City B, South Georgia Tormenta FC and Toronto FC II. The Kickers will face each team three times, with an additional meeting against one team.

Soccer Saturdays comprise the majority of the Kickers regular season home schedule, with 13 of 14 matches taking place on Saturdays. The one mid-week exception falls on Wednesday, October 2. Two matches, including the home opener on March 30, will kick off at 5:00 p.m. with the remainder of matches beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The regular season concludes at City Stadium Saturday, October 5 against Orlando City B. The top four teams will qualify for post season play with the final match of the postseason set to take place from October 17-21.

USL League One Unveils 2019 Home Openers

TAMPA, Fla. – (Friday, December 7, 2018) – USL League One today announced the home openers for its inaugural 2019 regular season, with 10 teams set to play 28 games each from March 29-Oct. 6 before the League One Playoffs kick off the weekend of Oct. 11-13.

The Richmond Kickers will open the 2019 USL League One Season, Saturday, March 30 at 5:00 p.m. as they play host to Lansing Ignite FC at City Stadium.

The entire 2019 League One regular-season schedule will be released next week. The 2019 campaign will conclude the weekend of Oct. 4-6, and the playoffs will consist of four teams, with the final match of the postseason set to take place from Oct. 17-21.

RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, November 28, 2018) – The Richmond Kickers will begin taking $50 non-refundable deposits for 2019 Season Tickets starting Wednesday, November 28. To place your deposit, please call Ticket Sales Manager David Kraft at 804-644-5425 x313.

Beginning in 2019, the Richmond Kickers will compete as a founding member of USL League One. The league consisting of ten teams will compete in a single table during the inaugural 2019 season, with the league’s regular season consisting of 28 games beginning the weekend of March 29-31, 2019.
