News and Notes:
A REMATCH A DECADE IN THE MAKING: The last time the Kickers and DC United met in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup was in 2013 in the third round when the MLS side made the trip down 95 for a match at City Stadium.
The match was a defensive affair as it remained locked at 0-0 all the way through extra time and went to penalties despite DC United being down to nine men after earning two red cards in extra time.
DC United won the penalty shootout 4-2 after the Kickers missed their first two penalties while DC United was perfect from the spot. DC United went on to win the tournament — marking the third and most recent time they’ve lifted the cup.
THE SEARCH FOR ANOTHER CUPSET CONTINUES: This marks the second time the Kickers have faced off against an MLS side in the Open Cup under Head Coach Darren Sawatzky. The Kickers previously faced off against Charlotte FC in the 2022 Open Cup and fell at home, 5-1.
The last time the Kickers earned a cupset was in 2011 when they defeated Sporting Kansas City 2-0 at the then-brand-new Livestrong Park. Shaka Bangura scored the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute before the late David Bulow found the insurance goal in the 83rd minute from the penalty spot.
Since then, the Kickers have had their cup runs ended by MLS opponents seven times: Charlotte (2022), Philadelphia (2018), Columbus (2015), New England (2014), DC (2013 and 2012), and Chicago (2011 USOC Semifinal).
OPEN CUP SCORING STREAK FOR TERZAGHI?: Reigning USL League One back-to-back-to-back MVP and Golden Boot winner Emiliano Terzaghi found his first goals of the 2023 season during the Open Cup second round against Cleveland SC.
The Argentine talisman notched the Kickers’ first two goals before assisting Dakota Barnathan’s eventual game-winner in the Kickers’ 3-2 victory.
Previously, Terzaghi recorded his first-ever Open Cup goal in April 2022 in the third round against NC Fusion U23. He scored a near-post goal from a near-impossible angle in the 117th minute to give the Kickers a 1-0 win as they moved on to host Charlotte FC in the Round of 32.
DEFENDING CHAMPS UP NEXT: Following the match at DC, the Kickers will remain on the road as they head down to Statesboro, Ga. to face defending USL League One Champions, South Georgia Tormenta FC.
Tormenta also faced off against an MLS opponent in the Open Cup third round when they traveled to Charlotte FC. Down 1-0, Tormenta went down to 10 men and the hosts would eventually win 4-1.
