RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, July 12, 2017) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that Virginia Credit Union has been named Presenting Sponsor of Premier League in RVA featuring Swansea City of the world famous English Premier League on Wednesday, July 19. The biggest party of the summer starts at 5:30 p.m. with live music by The Hit List, RVA food trucks and 20+ craft beers on tap before the Kickers battle the world’s best at 7:30 p.m. at City Stadium.
“The Richmond Kickers’ exhibition match with an English Premier League team is one of the highlights of the year for RVA, said Todd Feldman, Chief Marketing Officer for VACU. “We always look for opportunities to connect the community where people live, work and play. Virginia Credit Union is excited to partner with the Kickers for the match between our hometown team and the Swans of Swansea City.”
As the Presenting Sponsor, Virginia Credit Union will be featured prominently on all pre-game media and will benefit from in-stadium branding and interactive activation during the historic event.
“We are thrilled to partner with Virginia Credit Union to bring the biggest sporting event of the year to RVA,” added Santiago Lucio, Richmond Kickers Director of Business Development. “We knew that this partnership was a perfect fit right from the start of our conversations and we believe that it will help enhance the authentic Premier League experience and electric atmosphere at City Stadium.”
The prestigious match in Richmond is part of a 10-day, three-game East Coast tour and marks the fourth consecutive time a team from England’s top flight will appear in Virginia. Swansea have traveled to America four times for preseason, most recently having visited Richmond, Virginia in 2016 when the Kickers claimed a historic 2-0 victory in front of 7,128 fans. A 90-minute lightning delay at the end of the first half followed a Swansea own goal before Kickers forward Anthony Grant solidified the victory with a 74th minute tally to hand the home side their first victory over a Premier League opponent in club history.
Established in 1912, the Welsh club based in Swansea, South Wales, battled for many years in the lower divisions before making a historic climb from near bankruptcy in the Fourth Division to the Premier League in 2011, becoming the first Welsh team to play in the top flight since the league’s restructure in 1992. Swansea celebrated their greatest success to date by winning the Capital One Cup in 2013, with a record-breaking 5-0 victory over Bradford City, claiming the club’s first major trophy and qualifying for the 2013-14 UEFA Europa League. Swansea finished the 2016-17 season in 15th place in the English Premier League standings with a 12-21-5 record and 41 points.
