Richmond Kickers midfielder Fred Owusu Sekyere sent a perfect free kick into the center of the box and Conor Shanosky headed the ball into the top right corner for the lone goal of Saturday’s 1-0 win over the Harrisburg City Islanders. Despite losing the possession battle 60-40, being out passed 466-307 and shooting just five times on Saturday, the Kickers got the 3 points in their home opener.
Here are the top three moments from Saturday’s game:
Record Attendance

Saturday’s home opener saw a record 8,021 Kickers fans turn out to City Stadium, shattering the previous regular season record of 6,123, set September 17, 2016 against the Charleston Battery. The fans unrolled a 25th Anniversary TIFO after the national anthem, showing their support for one of the oldest, continuously-running soccer clubs in the United States. The fans were loud throughout, standing up to cheer on the Kickers several times during the warm March afternoon.
Travis Worra Penalty Save

Things looked bleak for the Kickers early in Saturday’s contest as the Islanders controlled the majority of possession and had a couple of chances on goal. Mallan Roberts fouled Aaron Wheeler as he tried to receive a long ball pass at the right side of the penalty box. Wheeler stepped up to take the penalty kick as Travis Worra jumped several times to pump himself and perhaps trigger Wheeler’s nerves. The Islanders’ striker struck the ball well and low, into the middle right part of the goal, but Worra caught it with his foot while diving to the right. The save kept the score at 0-0 and set up Worra’s shutout performance.
