The 2015 season marked the start of the professional career for Braeden Troyer, fresh off four years at the University of South Carolina. During his rookie campaign, Troyer logged the second most minutes (2207) on the team and added an assist in 28 appearances in his rookie season.
For Troyer, he credits his teammates and Richmond’s veteran experience for aiding in his transition from collegiate to professional-level soccer.
“I think that my first season was a solid start,” Troyer tells www.richmondkickers.com. “I could not have asked for better teammates during my rookie year, and I learned a lot from the veteran players.”
The native of South Carolina made his professional debut during a 1-0 win on the road against New York Red Bulls II.
“It was a real blessing that I was able to see the field so early on this past season,” the young defender remarked. “No matter how well-prepared one is, playing in or starting a match is never guaranteed and I am grateful for the opportunities I had last season.”
Early in the season, Troyer said he could feel the support from the crowd at City Stadium.
“The Richmond fans are great,” he added. “They are extremely welcoming and allow us to have a true home field advantage every time we play at City Stadium.”
After witnessing roommate Yudai Imura’s display in 2015, he has put the pressure on the Japanese midfielder for this upcoming season, saying he’s “looking forward to watching Yudai’s dance moves this year, while the Red Army chants his name!”
With his rookie season behind him and the 2016 season on the horizon, Troyer looks to build on what he has started in Richmond.
“My main focus is to continue being a reliable player for the Kickers,” he said. “I want to be a part of a backline this year that is hard to break down and will lead the team till the end of October.”
In his sophomore season, Troyer also wants to improve his own game right out the gate as the March 26th home opener approaches.
“In 2016, I hope to be more dangerous in the attacking half,” he explained. “It was nice to be able to contribute on both sides of the ball at the end of last season and I want to do that right from the start this year.”
