WEEK 1 REMATCH: One week after playing to a 0-0 draw in Charlotte, N.C. Both the Kickers and the Independence rattled off their first wins of the season.
Charlotte earned a 3-1 victory at defending champs, South Georgia Tormenta FC, albeit, scoring the go-ahead and insurance goals after South Georgia dropped down to 10 men with a 52nd-minute red card.
Meanwhile, the Kickers earned a 1-0 victory over Greenville after converting a set piece. Richmond will look to utilize set pieces to victory again after Charlotte’s conceded goal against South Georgia was from a set piece.
VINYALS POTW, BELMAR TOTW: Earning the fourth Player of the Week honor of his career, Vinyals proved vital to Richmond’s 1-0 victory in Greenville with his assist on Kharlton Belmar’s 12th-minute match-winner. Vinyals proved nearly impossible to contain throughout the contest, completing 100% of his dribbles, creating a quartet of chances, and winning a week-high five fouls. The 26-year-old Spanish midfielder added to his impressive outing with an 82% passing completion rate and 67% long-ball completion rate.
Belmar notched his first goal in League One with a perfect, long-range strike that served as the match-winner for Richmond. Belmar also gathered seven recoveries and won eight duels.
PALMQUIST SHINES IN HIS LEAGUE DEBUT: Palmquist made his first league start and earned a similar result to his first-ever Kickers’ start during the 2022 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup run: a clean sheet in a debut.
The 25-year-old commanded his area with poise as Richmond’s defensive efforts limited Greenville from attempting high-quality chances. Greenville only placed 2 of its 14 shots on target while Richmond amassed 14 interceptions and won 13 of 16 tackles. Palmquist was there to shut down Greenville’s two attempts on goal.
