Cordovs living out his dream with Kickers

The United States is often referred to as the land of opportunity. For Richmond Kickers forward Heviel Cordovés, his opportunity playing soccer in the United States came through a long and arduous journey.
Cordovés grew up in Havana, Cuba, a land mostly known for its baseball not soccer talent. In that sense, Cordovés was an outlier and instead put his scoring skills on display for the hometown soccer team, Ciudad de la Habana from 2008-2012.
“Cuba’s a place with happy people even though they have nothing,” Cordovés said. “They’re always happy and trying to move forward. It was great playing in front of my family and friends. It’s great support.”
The left-footed forward made his international debut in 2008 with Cuba and earned nine caps over a five year stretch. Still, like most Cuban athletes, Cordovés thirsted for a chance to play professionally in the United States.
“When I started growing up in soccer, I thought I had the quality to play professionally,” Cordovés said. “In Cuba, we don’t have that possibility because in Cuba we don’t have professional sports. I always thought that I had to try to find my way [to the United States] to make that happen. It was my dream.”
That dream wouldn’t come without some difficult decisions. The only way for Cordovés to play professionally would be to defect to the United States.
“To be honest, I was scared,” Cordovés said. “I was afraid because I didn’t know what would be my future. Like I said, I thought before that I had to make it happen. I had to find my way to achieve my dream. I was afraid, but at the same time I was sure that I had to take that opportunity.”
The 6-2, 194 pound forward wasn’t entering uncharted territory. Cuban soccer players like Osvaldo Alonso had paved the way for guys like Cordovés to even think about developing a soccer career in America. Alonso defected from Cuba in 2007, and he quickly became a star in the MLS with the Seattle Sounders after a one-year stint in the USL with Kickers’ rival, the Charleston Battery. In 2017, Alonso became the first player in Seattle Sounders’ history to amass 20,000 minutes in the history of the team. Alonso’s success story was something that Cordovés could look to and imagine himself in the same cleats.
“Osvaldo Alonso is my good friend,” Cordovés said. “I played with him in Cuba. I looked to him as an example. He had a successful career and I wanted to be like him.”
The time had come. Cordovés and two other teammates, Maikel Chang and Odisnel Cooper, hatched a plan to make their run for freedom during a World Cup qualifying match against Canada in October 2012. The three teammates got their opportunity at a Toronto hotel and bursted down a back stairwell when the coaches weren’t around. The players later took a bus to Niagara Falls. Cordovés remembers sitting on that bus and thinking about all that he was leaving behind in Cuba.
“At that moment my mind was confused,” Cordovés said. “Too many things were going on in that moment in my head, leaving my life, my family, the people that I know, everything. If it doesn’t work I didn’t know what was going to happen.”
All the worrying was finally put to rest when the trio stepped onto U.S. soil. Cordovés, Chang, and Cooper were all given legal permanent resident status under the “wet-foot, dry foot” policy. No longer did Cordovés have to think about being caught or being sent back to Cuba. Instead, he could now focus on starting his new life in the United States.
“It’s like I was reborn,” Cordovés said. “Everything was new. At that moment it was a great feeling. I’m in a free country. My life was changed.”
Cordovés found his place with the Charleston Battery just like Alonso and became a proven goalscorer over the past five years. The Cuban native tallied 21 goals over 86 appearances, including nine goals in 2017, the second most for the Battery. In December 2017, Cordovés signed with the Kickers and has collected 334 minutes in six appearances over three starts in the 2018 season.
“He’s a good pro,” said head coach Leigh Cowlishaw. “He’s focused and intense and very competitive, but also he has a laid-back approach where it’s not going to faze him. There’s bigger things in life.”
The 28-year old forward recorded his first goal with the Kickers this past Sunday in the 3-1 loss at Bethlehem Steel FC. Cordovés received the pass from Kickers’ defender Austin Yearwood in the box and connected with his left foot to find the back of the net.
“It was a great finish,” Cowlishaw said. “He’s very serious about making an impact for the club and the team, the players. I appreciate that and I see that, so it’s good for him to get that goal. We’re going to need more of that.”
“I’m just living my dream,” Cordovés said. “I felt great because I want to achieve great success with this team. They brought me here to score goals, so it was good to start making those numbers.”
It’s a story of courage. A story of opportunity. And a story that keeps getting better every time Cordovés continues his dream by stepping on the pitch.

BETHLEHEM, PA — (Sunday, May 6, 2018) — The Richmond Kickers (2-4-1) fell on the road Sunday evening against Bethlehem Steel FC (2-3-2) at Goodman Stadium. Bethlehem responded with three unanswered goals by a first half goal from Matthew Real and then second half goals by Santi Moar and a converted penalty by Chris Nanco.
Steel FC nearly took an early lead in the third minute. Adam Najem from the right side played in a free kick into the Richmond box and picked out Santi Moar with a header as he was going towards the far post and pings it off the crossbar. Richmond cleared the ball away from danger.
Santi Moar looked for another opportunity to take the lead ten minutes later. Najem fed the ball up the left side to Moar. He took a touch and cut inside the top of the Richmond box. Moar tried to sneak a shot into the near post as Travis Worra was there to make the stop.
Heviel Cordovés came into the match in the 10th minute for an injured Giuseppe Gentile and made his impact felt five minutes later. Brian Shriver controlled the ball out wide left in the corner and played the ball back for Austin Yearwood making a run up the field. After a give and go with Shriver, Yearwood broke into the box and played the ball back to the center of the Bethlehem box for the substitute Cordovés. He quickly took a one-time chip to the far post and opened up his account with the Kickers.
Adam Najem was denied by the crossbar to keep Bethlehem off the scoresheet in the 27th minute. Najem won the ball inside the center circle and fed it up the right side of the field for Santi Moar. Moar looked to try to create enough space for a shot, instead he left the ball for Najem at the top of the box for a quick shot off the crossbar.
Three minutes later and Bethlehem would finally level the score through Matthew Real. Moar received the ball out wide left. He reached the end line and took a quick touch to get by Conor Shanosky. Seeing Real in space, Moar played the quick pass for Real and he took the quick, low shot to Worra’s right and into the back of the net.
Drew Skundrich nearly gave the home side the lead in the 33rd minute. Moar kept the Kickers defense busy, getting to the end line and having enough time to chip in a cross. Skundrich leapt to meet the ball for a header that he puts just wide of the Kickers goal.
Heviel Cordovés came close to his second goal of the night in first half stoppage time. Alex Lee from the right side whipped in a perfectly placed cross into the box. Cordovés tried to just get a touch on it as it went just wide of the post and out for goal kick.
The woodwork came to the rescue for Richmond once again two minutes into the start of the second half. Fabian Herbers played the ball out wide left for Santi Moar. He took the ball up to the six-yard box and looked to the near post, and hits it as it deflects for a goal kick for Richmond.

KICKERS TRAVEL TO BETHLEHEM SUNDAY

RICHMOND, VA – (Friday, May 4, 2018) – The Richmond Kickers (2-3-1) are finally back in action after an 11-day break this Sunday evening as they travel to face Bethlehem Steel FC (1-3-2) at Goodman Stadium for the second time this season. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m. with the game available live on the Kickers Official Television Partners WTVR CBS 6 via their 6.3 sub channel (Comcast 206, Verizon FiOS 466) as well as streaming online through ESPN+.
The Kickers will be looking for revenge after falling in the first meeting this season with Bethlehem, a 1-4 loss at Goodman Stadium. Eric Ayuk opened the scoring for Steel FC in the 24th minute, with Derrick Jones notching another goal in the 40th minute giving the home side a 2-0 lead heading into halftime. Oscar Umar pulled one back for Richmond in the 57th minute, set up by Brian Shriver. Just seven minutes later, Brandon Allen scored the first of two goals in the match to give Bethlehem the decisive 4-1 victory over Richmond. In the overall series, the Kickers trail with a record of 1-2-2.
Richmond comes into the match this Sunday following an 11-day layoff after their second win of the 2018 season, a 2-1 victory over Toronto FC II at City Stadium back on April 25. Aidan Daniels opened the scoring in the 9th minute, giving the visitors an early lead on the road. Yudai Imura leveled the score only two minutes later as he was set up by D.C. United loanee Dane Kelly, making his first appearance for the Kickers. An own goal sealed the victory for Richmond after Raul Gonzalez whipped in a cross trying to pick out either Brian Shriver or Giuseppe Gentile, as the ball took a bounce off the shins of Brandon Onkony and into his own net.
Bethlehem were handed a 1-3 loss on the road at Louisville City FC in their last outing April 28. Three goals in nine minutes behind a Cameron Lancaster brace gave the home side the lead early on. RICHMOND, VA — (Wednesday, April 25, 2018) — The Richmond Kickers (2-3-1) came from behind to down Toronto FC II (0-4-1) Saturday night at City Stadium. Aidan Daniels opened the scoring for Toronto in the 9th minute, as Yudai Imura responded two minutes later to level the score. An own goal by Brandon Onkony was enough to give the Kickers their second victory of the season.
Toronto broke the deadlock just after nine minutes through Aidan Daniels. Malik Daniels controlled the ball right at the midfield line and made a run up the right flank, having enough pace to get around Yudai Imura. As he reached the end line, Johnson played a cross in for Shaan Hundal in front of goal. He could not control the ball enough for a shot and left it for Daniels, who came in and snuck inside the near post and past Travis Worra for the opener.
The Kickers would respond right away as Yudai Imura scored his second of the season in the 11th minute. Raul Gonzalez sent the ball in towards the near post from the right corner to Dane Kelly, making his Kickers debut. Kelly turned for a shot on goal and had it blocked by Romeo Rocco. He pounced on the rebound and turned to pass it back for Yudai Imura. He would go for the top right corner from about 25 yards out to level the score with a rocket.
Malik Johnson looked to put the Toronto back in the lead in the 24th minute. Gideon Waja took control of the ball at the top of the Richmond box. Looking for a shot, Waja elected to make a short pass for Johnson just to the right of goal, and playing a shot to the right of Travis Worra as he dove to make the save.
A pair of chance for Richmond nearly gave them the lead, starting with one from Brian Shriver as came close to his third goal of the season in the 32nd minute. Koby Osei-Wusu switched the field getting a cross over to Shriver up the left flank. He took two touches to get enough space for a shot that ended up going wide by inches of the far post. Two minutes later, Austin Yearwood found space on the left side of the field that nearly found the head of Osei-Wusu.
A own goal from Brandon Onkony in the 55th minute gave the Kickers the breakthrough. A team effort moving the ball up the field, Raul Gonzalez touched the ball to Imura, who in turn fed the ball up for second-half substitute Giuseppe Gentile. He flicked the ball over for Gonzalez as he was continuing his run up the right side. Gonzalez cut in towards goal and sent in a low, fast cross trying to pick out either Brian Shriver or Gentile. He ended up finding the feet of Onkony, as he redirected the ball into his own net.
Toronto pushed for an equalizer in the 60th minute through Malik Johnson. Steffen Yeates played the ball out wide right for Johnson in front of the Toronto bench. Johnson looked for options to play to, and as he found no one in space, took a shot from the top of the Richmond 18-yard box that forced Travis Worra to tip the ball over the net to concede a corner kick.
Raul Gonzalez came close to getting a third goal for the Kickers in the 68th minute. Brian Shriver found an opening and fed the ball through for Raul Gonzalez charging up the right side. Before Robert Boskovic could slide in for the stop, Gonzalez tried to sneak the ball through Angelo Cavalluzzo’s legs, but the keeper was quick to make the stop.
