Wednesday Match Between Richmond Kickers and Forward Madison Postponed; Rescheduled for Oct. 6

TAMPA, Fla. – USL League One announced today that the game between the Richmond Kickers and Forward Madison FC, originally scheduled for September 1 at City Stadium in Richmond, Va., has been postponed until October 6.

The decision to postpone the match was made due to the anticipated impact of severe weather in the Richmond area as a result of Hurricane Ida. 

Fans with tickets for the Sept. 1 match will be contacted shortly by a Richmond Kickers representative to transfer tickets to the rescheduled date or for another future 2021 regular-season match at City Stadium.
 
The Kickers’ next match is Saturday, Sept. 11 on the road at Forward Madison FC. Kickoff for that match is set for 8:00 p.m. EST, 7:00 p.m. CST. The match will stream live on ESPN+, and locally in Richmond on WTVR CBS 6.3 (Comcast 206, Verizon FiOS 466). Fans can also listen in Spanish on the radio on WULT 94.1FM/1540AM.

Match Recap: Kickers Earn a Clean Sheet and Move into Sixth Place

RICHMOND, VA — The Richmond Kickers (6-6-7) earned their league-lead tying seventh clean sheet of the season at City Stadium against North Carolina FC (4-10-4) and made their way back into a tentative playoff position as the two sides drew 0-0, Saturday night.

With the sun beating down on the pitch at City Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the whistle was blown and the fourth match-up between the regional rivals was underway. The opening minutes of the match saw both sides jockeying for control of the midfield as they tried to create opening scoring opportunities. 

Shortly after, North Carolina crossed a ball from the wing, Robert Kristo received it and tried his luck getting around Esteban Calvo, but Calvo knocked the ball out at the last second for a corner which resulted in a change of possession. 

Later on, in the 31st minute, the Kickers would make a precautionary change to lineup and formation as Stanley Alves had to come off with a knock. Nathan Aune would come in for Alves and slot into the midfield as Matt Bolduc, who played at the top of the midfield to start the match, took over for Alves on the right wing.

Several minutes later, Emiliano Terzaghi found himself in space in the corner of North Carolina’s box, picking his head up, he drilled a shot which ricocheted off a defender back into his feet, then had another go at goal which was collected by NCFC keeper Jake McGuire.

With only several minutes remaining in the first half, North Carolina’s Aziel Jackson found space at the top of the box for a shot and tried curling one in, but Akira Fitzgerald got his body behind the shot and collected it calmly. The whistle would blow soon after to signal the end of the first half with the deadlock intact.

The second half started with the same intensity that the first half ended with as both sides again worked to earn control in the match. New boy Ethan Bryant — who was enjoying his first home start since signing as a loanee earlier in the month — laid a pass off to Terzaghi at the top of the box, who flicked it with his heel over a defender back to Bryant who volleyed the ball at McGuire in stride and forced McGuire to make an acrobatic save, leaping for the attempt at goal.

Rolling into the 62nd minute, both sides still level at 0-0, Terzaghi received the ball at the top of the North Carolina box, turned and dribbled into space to fire off a missile of a shot at the goal which landed just above the crossbar. 

Near the 75th minute, Bolanos received the ball on the left-wing, just outside of the North Carolina box and switched the play to Bryant on the other end of the box who teed up for a low-driven shot at goal, but the shot went just wide of the right post and hit the side netting.

The clock was ticking its way into the final minutes of the match and both sides were still powering through a sweltering Richmond night, trying to find the final piece of the puzzle to tip the scales in their respective favor. 

With five minutes of extra time allotted to the match, North Carolina had a free kick in Richmond’s half near the midfield line. The kick fell into Richmond’s box and Kristo got his head to it to flick it on target, but Fitzgerald lept towards his post, making an incredible save that guaranteed Richmond their seventh clean sheet of the season. Shortly after, the final whistle blew, and Richmond walked away with a hard-fought point and moved up to sixth place in the table.

The Reds have a short turnaround as they prepare to host Henny Derby rivals Forward Madison FC on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at City Stadium. The last time the two clubs faced each other was in Madison, Wi., back in June with the Reds earning a point and a clean sheet. This time around, the Kickers will have the backing of the City Stadium faithful as they continue their push for a playoff position. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers (6-6-6) will enjoy a return to City Stadium as they face their regional rivals, North Carolina FC (4-10-3), for the fourth time this season. Kickoff for the match is Saturday, August 28th, at 6:30 p.m.

The last matchup between Richmond and North Carolina was in the middle of a three matches in seven days span that resulted in an anomalous 4-0 loss on the road for the Reds. Outside of the most recent match up, the contests between Richmond and NCFC have been close affairs as the pair played to a 0-0 draw at City Stadium in their first outing before NCFC edged out a 2-1 win at home. In that match, the Kickers opened the scoring but a pair of second-half goals from the hosts would earn the win despite the Kickers nearly finding two separate equalizers late in the match while down to 10 men.

The Kickers return to City Stadium fresh off a 2-0 win at reigning USL League One title-holders, Greenville Triumph SC. The match began rather slowly, both teams feeling each other out, trying to exploit spaces for the first half. Then, within a minute of walking out onto the pitch for the second half, Stanley Alves collected a ball deep within his own half, shimmied past the pressure of a Greenville defender and freed up Jonathan Bolanos on the wing with an incisive through-ball pass. Bolanos, with a surge of pace, darted up the left-wing before cutting inside and drilling a low shot into the near post, beating Greenville’s keeper.

With 10 minutes left in the Bon Secours Cup, Chris Cole won an aerial duel near the corner flag and managed to find space to swing a low cross into Emiliano Terzaghi who trapped the ball with a magnificent first touch. With a quick pivot, Terzaghi slotted a shot at the far post at a near-impossible angle which ricocheted across the goal line and hit the other post before crossing the line for the second goal of the evening. Richmond walked off the field with three hard-fought points, the Bon Secours Cup, and level on points (24) with the third place team in USL League One.

North Carolina’s last match was against Forward Madison this past Wednesday in North Carolina, earning three points at home over a team that is jockeying for position with the Kickers. Nelson Martinez scored the game winner for North Carolina early in the eighth minute and the team held a clean sheet for the remainder of the 82 minutes. 

Following the match against North Carolina, Richmond will enjoy another match at City Stadium against their rivals from Madison, Wi., Wednesday, September 1. The Kickers faced Forward Madison in Wisconsin earlier in June with the match resulting in a 0-0 draw. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m.

Ethan Bryant (#8) is a new loan signing for Richmond. Despite having only played several minutes in his debut against New England Revolution II, Bryant started the match against Greenville. Bryant had a block and gained possession five times playing in the box-to-box midfielder role. 

Ivan Magalhães (#4) was in the Cleer Audio Team of the Week for his heroic defensive efforts against Greenville over the weekend. Magalhães won 88.9% of his duels and a success rate of 85.7% in his aerial duels. Magalhães did not concede a single foul, made four blocks, five clearances, and two interceptions to help guide the Reds to a clean sheet.

Emiliano Terzaghi (#32) is currently tied in the Golden Boot race (12) with Mario Lomis. Terzaghi has scored a goal in the last four matches he’s played in, and just recently surpassed Ronaldo Damus’ all-time goal-scoring record in the league. Terzaghi averages a goal every 118.2 minutes.

Robert Kristo (#11) is North Carolina’s leading goal scorer with four goals. Kristo scored two goals against Richmond in their last matchup and averages a goal every 151.5 minutes.

Jay Tee Kamara (#19) has scored three goals this season and made five assists this season, Kamara is an advanced, play-making midfielder who isn’t shy to dribble into space and keep possession to distribute the ball. TAMPA, Fla. — USL League One announced on Monday that Richmond Kickers defender Ivan Magalhães has been named to the Cleer Audio Team of the Week for Week 20 after Sunday’s 0-2 road win over reigning league champs, Greenville Triumph SC.

This marks the second time in 2021 that the club co-captain has been named to the Cleer Audio Team of the Week after previously receiving the honor for his performance in Week 5.

“It felt great to get a win and keep a clean sheet against a tough opponent on the road,” Magalhães said. “I’m proud of all the guys that really put out an amazing effort to secure the win.

“I am happy with the recognition, but more importantly I am happy that we got all three points to put ourselves in a good position for the playoff race.”

Magalhães was a force on the Kickers’ backline against Greenville as the Kickers earned their sixth clean sheet of the season. In one-on-one situations, the Brazilian dominated his space as he won nearly 82 percent of his duals and 78 percent of his aerial duels. Perhaps his signature play of the match was a patient shadowing of Greenville’s Jesús Ibarra before pouncing and poking the ball out of play with a perfectly-timed slide tackle.

Magalhães would finish all 90 minutes without conceding a foul while winning a foul. He would also rack up six (6) clearances, one (1) block, and (1) tackle.

Furthermore, he would finish the night as the Reds’ top passer with the most passes and successful passes. He completed 37 good passes and crosses as well as finishing third on the team with 14 passes in the Greenville half.

Magalhes Named to the USL League One Cleer Audio Team of the Week

TAMPA, Fla. — USL League One announced on Monday that Richmond Kickers defender Ivan Magalhães has been named to the Cleer Audio Team of the Week for Week 20 after Sunday’s 0-2 road win over reigning league champs, Greenville Triumph SC.

This marks the second time in 2021 that the club co-captain has been named to the Cleer Audio Team of the Week after previously receiving the honor for his performance in Week 5.

“It felt great to get a win and keep a clean sheet against a tough opponent on the road,” Magalhães said. “I’m proud of all the guys that really put out an amazing effort to secure the win.

“I am happy with the recognition, but more importantly I am happy that we got all three points to put ourselves in a good position for the playoff race.”

Magalhães was a force on the Kickers’ backline against Greenville as the Kickers earned their sixth clean sheet of the season. In one-on-one situations, the Brazilian dominated his space as he won nearly 82 percent of his duals and 78 percent of his aerial duels. Perhaps his signature play of the match was a patient shadowing of Greenville’s Jesús Ibarra before pouncing and poking the ball out of play with a perfectly-timed slide tackle.

Magalhães would finish all 90 minutes without conceding a foul while winning a foul. He would also rack up six (6) clearances, one (1) block, and (1) tackle.

Furthermore, he would finish the night as the Reds’ top passer with the most passes and successful passes. He completed 37 good passes and crosses as well as finishing third on the team with 14 passes in the Greenville half.

As a team, the Kickers only allowed one (1) of Greenville’s 18 shots on target while blocking 10 of them.

Match Recap: Richmond Brings Home Bon Secours Cup with 0-2 Win At Greenville

RICHMOND, VA  — The Richmond Kickers (6-6-6) held their lines defensively and punished reigning league champs, Greenville Triumph SC (6-5-7) on the counter to earn a 2-0 victory on the road to bring home the Bon Secours Cup for the third-straight season on the backs of second-half goals from Jonathan Bolanos and Emiliano Terzaghi.
 
With the match underway, the Reds kicked off the second leg of the Bon Secours Cup on the front foot with an ambitious shot by Terzaghi from outside of the box within the first several minutes to test Greenville’s goalkeeper, Paul Christensen, who took Dallas Jaye’s usual position between the sticks. 
 
Greenville’s Joshua Donnelly and Andrew Booth each managed to squeeze a shot off at Richmond’s goal, both shots off target, sailing over the goal. Later in the 22nd minute, Donnelly threw himself into the Richmond box for a diving header that went wide of the goalpost. Several minutes later, Jonathan Bolanos was unlocked in the middle of the pitch with a cheeky flick-pass by Terzaghi. Bolanos sprinted through the heart of the Greenville defense and got a shot off but it rolled wide of the goal.
The first half concluded scoreless and without stoppage time as both teams were trying to create dangerous goal-scoring opportunities. However, the Kickers walked back onto the pitch for the second half ready to change the scoreline. Stanley Alves received a ball deep in the Richmond defense, shimmied past a Greenville attacker, and freed up Bolanos on the left wing who made a dashing run up the left flank. Bolanos cut inside and cranked a shot off that fizzed in by the near post, beating Christensen and giving Richmond a 1-0 lead. 
 
With Richmond in the lead, Greenville found themselves under pressure, scrambling to level the scoreline, but they couldn’t beat the Reds’ defense and Akira Fitzgerald’s veteran sensibilities in goal. With their foundation set on the defensive end, Richmond set up shop on the counterattack. 
 
Matt Bolduc burst through the middle of the field, laying the ball off to Chris Cole on the left wing in an advanced position. Cole whipped in a low cross from the corner into Terzaghi, who took a fantastic touch to trap the ball, turn his defender around, and whip a shot into the far post. The ball clattered off the far post, across the goalmouth, and into the near post before finding the inside of the goal. 
 
The goal would not only provide the insurance Richmond needed to see out the result, but it was also Terzaghi’s 22nd regular-season goal in USL League One giving him the title as the league’s current leading scorer. It would also mark Terzaghi’s 12th goal of the 2021 season, giving him a share of the Golden Boot race.
 
Richmond saw out the remaining minutes of the match with the same intensity they put into it from the first whistle, and they were rewarded with three points on the road and a clean sheet, catapulting Richmond up into seventh place, tied with six other teams with 24 points.
 
The Reds’ next match will be against North Carolina FC back at City Stadium. The last time the two clubs faced each other was in the middle of a tough, three-game road run, and NCFC walked away with three points. Kickers will have an opportunity to get payback against North Carolina on August 28. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers (5-6-6) are back on the road to face reigning USL League One title-winners, Greenville Triumph SC (6-5-6) in the final regular-season leg of the 2021 Bon Secours Cup. 
 
The last matchup between Richmond and Greenville resulted in an unfortunate 0-1 loss for the Reds at City Stadium in the 2021 season home opener. Richmond played well against Greenville’s low-block and pragmatic attack for the better part of the match. It wasn’t until a late 74th-minute own goal would throw a wrench in Richmond’s momentum as they pounced on Greenville’s 10-man team after Cesar Murillo received a second yellow card and ejection in the 40th minute.
Richmond’s last outing was at City Stadium to face New England Revolution II for the third time this season. Richmond had previously beaten Revs II twice, once in the season opener, and again several weeks later, scoring three goals on both occasions and earning six points. 
 
This time around Richmond opened the scoring up with an Emiliano Terzaghi goal in the six-yard box, beating his mark to get a foot to a cross played-in by Matt Bolduc. Bolduc made an enterprising run up the left wing after a heady pass from Nil Vinyals unlocked the winger in a dangerous area. 
 
Terzaghi would walk back onto the pitch for the second half ready to score another goal, this time, a drilled shot from roughly 35 yards out, beating Joe Rice to hit the back of the net, bringing Richmond’s lead to 2-0. But in the last several minutes of regular time, Revs II managed to score from a tight angle as Noel Buck launched a shot across the box and an equalizing goal from Kizza in the 87th minute. The two teams would see out the remainder of the match with a level scoreline, both sides walking off the pitch with a point.
Greenville’s last match was against Tormenta FC and resulted in a 3-1 loss. The match started with an early goal from Tormenta’s Luca Mayr-Fälten in the 10th minute. Greenville answered back with a 21st-minute goal by Jesús Ibarra. Tormenta took to the field to seal the deal after the first half and scored two goals from Stefan Mueller and Marco Micaletto within three minutes. 
 
Following the road trip south, Richmond returns to City Stadium to host their regional rivals, North Carolina FC. The Kickers faced NCFC in North Carolina most recently in the middle of a string of three matches in a week, with the home side taking a 4-0 result. This time around, Richmond will have a chance to take points back from NCFC at home in front of the Red Army on August 28. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m.

Jalen Crisler (#15) is a composed center-back, slotting into this new Richmond team seamlessly. Crisler has a passing accuracy of 81.3%, providing a well-composed option to play out of the backfield.
