Kickers, CBS 6 Announce #RallyTogether Fund

RICHMOND, Va. – (Thursday, April 30, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers and WTVR CBS 6 have partnered together to create the #RallyTogether fund to support both Feed More and local Bon Secours healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Fans can purchase a rally towel for just $10 with the proceeds going to support FeedMore, plus you will receive a complimentary ticket voucher to the Richmond Kickers 2020 Home Opener (Date TBD). The Kickers will also donate an additional ticket to local healthcare workers through Bon Secours on your behalf!

“Our Richmond Kickers family is excited to lead the #RallyTogether effort as we work with our community partners at CBS 6, Bon Secours, and Feed More to assist in providing meals to local RVA families,” commented Rob Ukrop, Richmond Kickers Chairman. “We are also excited to provide a ticket to a local healthcare professional with each purchase of a rally towel as we look to celebrate the beautiful game together at City Stadium in the coming months.”
Before the COVID-19 pandemic increased the need for essential services like Feed More, central Virginia was already in great need. Feed More’s programs are dedicated to providing healthy meals and hope for a better tomorrow to Central Virginians who face hunger. For every $1 donated, Feed More is able to provide four meals to those in need. In total, Feed More’s programs and network of agencies provide more than 52,000 meals each day to neighbors in need across 34 counties and cities across Central Virginia.

USL League One Season Delay Extended

TAMPA, Fla. – The United Soccer League provided additional updates today on how the ongoing COVID-19 crisis is affecting the 2020 USL Championship and League One seasons.

With approval of the Championship and League One Board of Governors, the USL has extended its temporary suspension of the 2020 Championship and League One seasons. The previous suspension ran through May 10, but with that timeline no longer tenable, the USL will await further guidance and clarity from local, state and national health authorities before announcing a new earliest return to play date. Both leagues have also extended their respective team training moratoriums through May 15. However, USL is also exploring scenarios that would allow for players to return to training facilities to conduct individual or small group work prior to May 15. Any re-opening of club facilities will be done in accordance with local and state guidelines, and with all involved adhering to strict players social distancing protocols.

As things stand today, the USL is still in a position to reschedule all matches in both leagues affected by the COVID-19 crisis to date, and will continue to receive guidance from public health experts, as well as a national medical task force comprised of other professional sports leagues and organizations from around the country. While a complete season remains the preferred outcome of any return to play scenario, a variety of alternative competitive formats in both the Championship and League One are also being explored as the USL continues to prioritize the health and wellness of everyone involved.

Kickers unveil new digital series Coaches' Corner

RICHMOND, Va. – (Monday, April 20, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers are excited to announce Coaches’ Corner; a new digital interview series where coaches in the Kickers organization discuss a range of topics surrounding the challenges and intricacies of being a soccer coach.

The first episode is slated to premiere April 20, at 6 p.m. ET on the Kickers’ official Youtube Channel.

Kickers exit USL eCup with Round of 16 loss

RICHMOND, Va. – (Friday, April 17, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers’ quest for the inaugural USL eCup title ended in the Round of 16 after new USL League One Rivals, Union Omaha won the best of three series.

After cycling through all three members of the Kickers’ Rocket League team in the group stage, it was team captain, Taylor Bostic who represented the Reds in the round of 16. However, the knockout round match proved to be a buzzsaw.

One of the top seeds in the knockout stages, Union Omaha’s eSports Pro, Wesley Mims entered the round of 16 top of Group 6 with a +56 goal differential. Mims was quick to take insurmountable leads in each of the three matches with advanced dribbling and aerial moves. 

While an unfortunate result for the Reds, Bostic scored the most goals against Mims of any player in the tournament so far.

Ultimately, the Kickers exited the tournament as the only team to cycle through an entire roster of players that consisted of members of first-team operations, the youth team, and the Red Army.

A Game to Forget: Kickers fall to Saint Louis FC in USL eCup Game 2

RICHMOND, Va. – (Monday, April 6, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers fell to Saint Louis FC in successive matches as the USL Championship side earned a stranglehold over the group.

The River City Red Army’s drummer, Mike Dillon took charge of the virtual sticks as the Kickers’ plan to rotate between players during the group stage continued. However, the Red Army’s heartbeat was stopped as Saint Louis’ Alamaxia continued his strong performances in the group stage.

Dillon set the tone early in game one as he aggressively pushed to find the opening goal, but Saint Louis was able to counter and take the lead in the opening minute. The match would continue in a similar fashion as the Kickers’ attempts on offense were countered and ended with a Saint Louis goal. With the score at 10-0 to Saint Louis, Dillon was able to find the net in successive attempts in the final minute, but two more goals from Alamaxia before the end of the match would end momentum and cancel out the swing in goal differential.

The second match played out like the first match as momentum was clearly in Saint Louis’ favor and the Kickers were left reacting. With the second match cinched up with a scoreline of 14-0 in favor of Saint Louis, Richmond was left to start game-planning for the final match of the group stage.

The Kickers will face New York Red Bulls II on Wednesday, April 8 at 5 p.m. with a spot in the knockout stage on the line. With North Texas SC barely edging past Red Bulls II, Monday night, Richmond moves down to third place in the group tied on points with North Texas but behind in goal differential.

The Reds will move on to the knockout stage with a win over New York and a Saint Louis win over North Texas. If the Kickers win and North Texas pulls an upset over Saint Louis in game three, the second place in the group will be determined by goal differential.

The Henny Derby Returns (Sort Of): Kickers to play Forward Madison in Connect 4

RICHMOND, Va. – (Friday, March 27, 2020) – The Richmond Kickers are set to compete in a match of Connect 4 against Forward Madison FC on Saturday, March 28 at 3 p.m. ET, 2 p.m. CT.

The match will take place on Twitter on the same day that the teams were originally supposed to face off on the pitch before the COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start to the USL League One season.

A rivalry birthed over social media and at a Red Army Tailgate during the 2019 season, the Henny Derby is a competition and a bond between Richmond and Madison that was never contained exclusively in stadiums and grass fields.

Following the end of the Connect 4 match, a rebroadcast of the Forward Madison 0-1 Richmond Kickers match from 2019 will be played on the Kickers’ official Twitch channel. More details of that broadcast will be announced at a later time.
