RICHMOND, Va. — (Saturday, May 8, 2021) — The Richmond Kickers (2-2-0) took a 2-0 win at City Stadium Saturday night over South Georgia Tormenta FC (1-3-0). Emiliano Terzaghi scored his first two goals of the season. Akira Fitzgerald picked up his second clean sheet of the season behind two saves.
A team defensive effort shut down a shot from Adrian Billhardt in the 10th minute. Ricardo Gomez found Billhardt at the top of the box. After controlling the ball, he looked for a shot that Akira Fitzgerald knocked down. Jalen Crisler backed him up to clear the ball from danger.
The Kickers were denied from finding an opener in the 24th minute. Zaca Moran picked out Ivan Magalhães at the back post for a header on frame. Sergi Nus managed to be in the right place to make the block as the ball took a bounce off the post. Jonathan Bolanos looked for another chance as his shot went wide.
A massive save from Fitzgerald kept Ricardo Gomez off the score sheet. A free kick for Tormenta from about 25 yards out gave the visitors a set piece opportunity. Gomez stepped up and looked to sneak his shot inside the post. The veteran Kickers keeper was there to make the save.
Five minutes before halftime, Victor Falck nearly came up with a go-ahead goal. Matt Bolduc slid in to save the ball going out over the end line and got a cross off. Falck lept to get a head on the ball, with his shot going just over the net.
Nil Vinyals looked to score against his former club in the 66th minute. Moran played a corner short for Vinyals. He found space at the edge of the box, megging his defender as the Tormenta keeper came away with the save.
A goal line clearance kept Tormenta from sneaking in a goal in the 73rd minute. Micaletto slipped into the box and played a low, driven shot. Fitzgerald got a block on the shot but the ball rolled loose after he collided with Crisler. The Richmond keeper leapt to grab the ball before it rolled over the line.
The reigning USL League One MVP and Golden Boot winner netted his first goal of the season in the 80th minute. Terzaghi received the ball in the middle of the field and turned to find Oalex Anderson with space up the left wing. He worked himself past his defender to get the ball back to Terzaghi. The Argentine turned around his defender and chipped his shot over the keeper and into the back of the net.
Six minutes later, a penalty to Richmond would double the home side lead. Anderson continued his constant pressure as he broke into the box. Curtis Thorn came in with a late tackle, drawing the penalty for the Kickers. Terzaghi went for his shot but it was saved by Jara. The referee deemed the Tormenta keeper came off his line, forcing the kick to be retaken. Terzaghi powered his second attempt past the keeper to complete his brace.
The Kickers get a break in the schedule before returning to action on Saturday, May 22 to host league newcomers and former USL Championship rivals North Carolina FC at City Stadium. Kickoff for that match is set for 6:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at www.richmondkickers.com/Tickets.

It is with heavy hearts we share the news that former Kickers player and coach David Bulow passed away peacefully with his wife Nellie at his bedside the morning of May 6. He was 41.
Bulow is survived by his wife and his three amazing children: Aaron (6), Cameron (3), and Lucy (10 months).
“The Richmond Kickers family is heartbroken to learn of David’s passing,” said Kickers Chairman Rob Ukrop. “David’s impact on our club will not be forgotten, he served the community well as a player, as a coach of both our pro and youth teams, and more importantly as a friend to so many within the soccer landscape. Our hearts go out to Nellie and his children, Aaron, Cameron, and Lucy.”
The family asks for privacy during this difficult time. Additional updates, including any needs and wishes for communication, will be done through the GoFundMe page created in his honor.
It has been requested of those wishing to help the Bulow family that they may donate to the GoFundMe, send gift cards for groceries, add more sign-ups for the meal train, pray for the family, or simply offer a supportive hand.
Bulow enjoyed a storied career with the Kickers as a player from 2006-09 and 2011-13. He transitioned into the coaching ranks in the 2014 season when he worked as an assistant to long-time Kickers’ manager Leigh Cowlishaw. Bulow would go on to coach in the Richmond United Academy before taking the head coaching role at the Kickers when Cowlishaw stepped down in June 2018.
Beyond the soccer pitch, Bulow was beloved for his positivity and infectious smile.
“I am devastated by the news of the passing of my close friend, David Bulow,” current Kickers’ First Assistant Coach and former assistant to Bulow, Mika Elovaara shared. “His energy and love for life was contagious. When I think of him, I can’t help but to think of his favorite shirt, one with a simple text ‘Be a Good Person’ in the front.
“He was an incredible husband and a loving father, an enthusiastic and inspiring coach, and a dear friend. Beyond his immediate circle of friends and family, he was an ambassador of the beautiful game and someone who worked comfortably in the greater community of soccer globally, and more closely, in Richmond. A Kickers legend as a player, a coach for Kickers, Richmond United and Strikers, his legacy will live long and strong. My thoughts and prayers are with Nellie and the Bulow family, as we all learn to live with the sad new reality in his absence. He will be forever in our hearts and minds.”
A memorial service is being planned and details will be released when they are available.
The Richmond Kickers organization plans to honor Bulow and his family in the coming weeks.

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — (Sunday, May 2, 2021) — The Richmond Kickers (1-2-0) were defeated on the road Sunday night at DRV PNK Stadium by Fort Lauderdale CF (2-2-0). Nil Vinyals scored his first goal for the Kickers in the 75th minute, but Shaan Hundal scored a goal in each half for Fort Lauderdale to see the hosts take the victory.
Five minutes into the match, Emiliano Terzaghi was searching for the opener. Jonathan Bolanos came in to win control of the ball from Aime Mabika and laid the ball off for Juan Pablo Monticelli making a run up the left-wing. He whipped in a cross that ended up hitting off Ethan Hardin. Falling on his back, Terzaghi still managed to get a shot off that Luis Zamudio needed to save.
Two minutes later, Oalex Anderson had a chance of his own that came inches away from finding the back of the net. Luke Pavone fed the ball forward for Anderson as he quickly turned to make his run. Shaking off two defenders, Anderson looked towards the goal as his shot skipped just wide of the Fort Lauderdale net.
Fort Lauderdale found the opening tally in the 20th minute. Hundal received the ball on the right flank and quickly got it inside for George Acosta. Venton Evans made an overlapping run up the right side, as he had a chance on goal that was stopped by Austin Aviza. The ball came loose as Hundal came in to tap it in for the opener.
Looking for the equalizer, Terzaghi kept the pressure on the Fort Lauderdale defense just before halftime. In the 39th minute, Jalen Crisler stepped up to get the ball ahead to the feet of Terzaghi. With space on the right flank, Terzaghi elected to launch a shot that Zamudio could only punch away. A minute later, Vinyals looked ahead to Anderson. The St. Vincent man took three touches before getting it to Terzaghi at the top of the box. He switched feet before getting a shot off that was just wide to the left of the net.
A pair of chances just out of the half nearly had the Kickers level. Vinyals picked up control of the ball and found the space to slot it through to Terzaghi inside the Fort Lauderdale box. The Argentine tried for the one-time effort that was saved. Anderson came in for the follow-up shot that was blocked away by Noah Allen.
Nil Vinyals leveled the score for Richmond for his first goal for the Kickers. Bolanos split two defenders to cut across to the top of the box. He got the ball to Victor Falck, as he kept the ball moving to Vinyals. The Spaniard set his shot, putting it on frame. The Fort Lauderdale keeper looked to be in place to make the save as the ball took a deflection and snuck inside the post for Vinyal’s first goal of the season.
Four minutes later, Chris Cole came close to finding the back of the net on his debut. Matt Bolduc was making a run in as two defenders closed in. He turned to find Cole in acres of space. The debutant elected to go for a shot as Zamudio got enough on the ball to slow it down for Hardin to eventually clear.
A second goal for Fort Lauderdale came in the 83rd minute. Acosta sent in a lofted corner kick that found Hundal at the back post. He redirected the ball back towards the goal finding just enough space to get it into the net for the game-winner.
Austin Aviza came up big in stoppage time to maintain the scoreline during the final sequence of the match. Cesar Cuellar found Acosta making a run into the box. Aviza came off his line to deny the shot at the top of the six-yard box.
The Kickers are back at City Stadium Saturday night, May 8 to face South Georgia Tormenta FC, presented by Puritan Cleaners. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET, with gates opening at 5:00 p.m. Tickets are on sale now at www.richmondkickers.com/Tickets.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the signing of defender Chris Cole, pending league and federation approval. Cole will be available for selection Sunday when the Kickers travel to Fort Lauderdale CF.
“Chris Cole has worked incredibly hard over the past two years to get an opportunity in professional soccer,” said Chief Sporting Officer and Head Coach, Darren Sawatzky. “He came into preseason with us and he fit immediately with our culture here. His competitive nature and hard-nosed defending gives us another piece to our team at the back, and his approach to every day on and off the field adds another solid brick to the foundation.”
A gritty defender, Cole started his college career at Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina. His next season, he went back to his home state of Washington to play at Bellevue College, where he scored four goals and added three assists. His final three college seasons were played at Seattle Pacific University. In his senior season, Cole made 15 appearances and was named co-captain, scoring two goals, including the game-winning goal against Montana State Billings and added two assists.
“Being able to sign my first pro contract with the Kickers is really a blessing and a dream come true” commented Cole. “I believe the culture that Rob, Darren and everyone else in the organization have built is what makes this club so special. In the short time I’ve been here, I can already see how much this team means to the city and I’m beyond excited to be a part of it.”
In 2019, the Duvall, Washington native spent the season with the Seattle Sounders U23s in USL League Two. That season the club finished with a 7-3-4 record and was second in the Northwest Division.
“My goal this season is to star in my role within the group and do whatever is required to help this team win games,” added Cole. “If we can all do that, we’ll be in a good position to accomplish the team goal — lifting a trophy in November.”
The Kickers return to action Sunday night on the road as they travel down to Fort Lauderdale CF for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The match will air live on WTVR CBS 6.3 (Comcast 206, Verizon FiOS 466) and will be streamed on ESPN+. This match is also going to be available in Spanish on the radio on WULT Ultra 94.1FM/1540AM.
