It will be the first time the two Virginia sides face each other in competitive play
CHICAGO and RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond Kickers are set to host USL Championship side Loudoun United FC on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Third Round following a regional draw by US Soccer.
The third round matchup will be the first time the two sides face each other in competitive play after Loudoun was founded in 2019. The two Virginia sides have played preseason friendlies over the last three seasons. Loudoun currently sits seventh in the USL Championship Eastern Conference with a 1-1-1 record.
Richmond punched its ticket to the third round following a 5-2 victory over NISA side Maryland Bobcats FC in the second round. The Kickers began the tournament with a 1-0 victory over Christos FC in the first round.
The winner of the third round matchup will move on to the Round of 32 which will see eight MLS sides and the top-8 USL Championship sides from the 2023 season enter the fold.
Richmond is the only team competing from outside of the top division to win the US Open Cup. The Kickers won the nation’s championship in 1995 over the El Paso Patriots.
