RICHMOND, Va. — (Wednesday, September 26, 2018) — The Richmond Kickers (6-21-4) were defeated 1-4 to FC Cincinnati (22-3-6) at City Stadium Wednesday night. Nazmi Albadawi put Cincinnati up in the 16th minute. Heviel Cordovés leveled the score for Richmond in the 32nd minute from a through ball from Luiz Fernando. A pair of goals by Emmanuel Ledesma before halftime gave Cincinnati a 3-1 lead at halftime. Following a lightning delay that lasted over an hour, Emery Welshman tacked on a fourth goal for the visitors.

Cincinnati looked to get on the scoreboard with a chance early in the first minute. Kenney Walker tried to change up the field, picking out Corben Bone on the left side of the field. He cut across the top of the box to get enough space around Brandon Eaton for a shot that skipped wide of the goal.

Heviel Cordovés nearly found the breakthrough in the fifth minute. Raul Gonzalez waited to feed the ball to Cordovés in space. As he was pressured heading into the box, he went for a shot that ended up sailing over the goal.

The visitors went ahead in the 16th minute. Nazmi Albadawi played the ball up the field for Emery Welshman. Evan Lee came over to hold off Welshman trying to make the turn. Conor Shanosky came in to get control of the ball, but ended up putting it into space in the Kickers box. Albadawi continued his run and put the ball past Barnes for the opener.

Yudai Imura looked to set up a chance for the Kickers to get back into the match in the 25th minute. Luiz Fernando sent the ball ahead for Imura to get into space near the end line on the left side. He whipped in a cross for Heviel Cordovés, as his header went wide of the goal.

The Kickers pulled a goal back through Heviel Cordovés in the 32nd minute. Luiz Fernando fought off two Cincinnati defenders to play the ball through for Heviel Cordovés on a breakaway run up the right side. Patrick Barrett came back to try and stop Cordovés, but the Cuban forward cut back and around. He gave himself enough space to put it in past a diving Evan Newton for the goal.

Cincinnati pulled ahead again in the 40th minute. Brandon Eaton cleared away a chance by Emery Welshman, giving Cincinnati a corner kick. Emmanuel Ledesma came over to take the corner. He curled in the corner and ended up not touching anyone and found the goal.

Four minutes later, Ledesma stuck again. Kenney Walker chipped in a ball, as Shaun Russell leaped to head it away. Nazmi Albadawi came over to pick up the loose ball. Koby Osei-Wusu came over to keep pressure on Albadawi, forcing him to play the ball back for Ledesma in space. He looked up and went for goal, up and over Brandon Barnes for the third goal of the night.

The game was stopped in the 59th minute due to lightning in the area of City Stadium. Play resumed after over an hour delay.

Emery Welshman put Cincinnati up 4-1 in the 64th minute. Fred Owusu Sekyere was being pressured in the midfield and tried to get the ball to Oscar Umar in the middle of the pitch. Instead, Welshman pounced on the loose ball and made his run towards goal, slotting it to Brandon Barnes’ right.

A chance came for the Kickers to get back another goal back in the 69th minute. Luiz Fernando sent in a corner kick towards the top of the Cincinnati box. Giuseppe Gentile came over to meet the ball and went for a shot, putting it just over.

Raul Gonzalez followed that chance with one of his own in the 70th minute. Luiz Fernando picked up control of a deflected cross near the right corner. He started to cut inside towards the Cincinnati box, then quickly tried to get it to Gonzalez in space. Kenney Walker nearly gains control of the ball, but Gonzalez is able to get a shot off, which skips just past the near post.

One final chance for the Kickers came in the 82nd minute. Conor Shanosky chipped the ball up the center of the field for Fred Owusu Sekyere, who quickly one-timed it for Heviel Cordovés. He was able to quickly get a touch on the ball to get it through for Giuseppe Gentile making a run inside. Blake Smith slid in trying to stop the run, as Gentile was able to get back on the ball. Running out of space, he tried to slide in a shot, hitting off the post and out for a goal kick.
