Own Goal 10', Haworth 38'

RICHMOND, Va. — (Saturday, September 15, 2018) — The Richmond Kickers (6-19-4) were downed by two first half goals by Ottawa Fury FC (12-13-5) at City Stadium Saturday night. The first Ottawa goal came off an own goal from Mallan Roberts from a Carl Haworth cross. Haworth scored off a corner kick to double lead and ensure the three points to the visitors.

Raul Gonzalez had a chance just after three minutes to try and get Richmond on the board. Brandon Eaton floated in a cross from the right side that ended at the feet of Yudai Imura. He quickly passed it to Gonzalez for the shot. Nana Attakora got a foot in the way of the shot to deflect it away.

Ottawa had a break to go ahead in the 10th minute. Tony Taylor played the ball out wide right to Carl Haworth making an overlapping run towards the end line. He whipped in a cross as Mallan Roberts leaped to get a head on the cross, but directed it into the Richmond net for an own goal.

A long range effort came for Greg Boehme in the 18th minute. Boehme sent the ball out wide on the left for Brian Shriver. He tried to square a pass for Raul Gonzalez in front of goal, as Nana Attakora slide in to deflect it away. The ball fell to the feet of Boehme, who went for a one-time effort and put his shot over the goal.

A free kick in the 21st minute was a chance for the Kickers to draw level. Yudai Imura was brought down about an yard outside the Ottawa box. Brian Shriver and Scott Thomsen stood over the free kick opportunity. Shriver went for the shot towards goal, sending it just over the crossbar.

Ottawa doubled their lead in the 38th minute through Carl Haworth. Adonijah Reid won a corner kick for Ottawa on the left side. Haworth came over for the kick. The corner kick was on frame, just out of the reach of Brandon Barnes and into the back of the net.

The post came to the rescue for the Kickers as Ottawa nearly scored a third. Steevan Dos Santos gained control of the ball inside his own half. He played the ball wide for Adonijah Reid on the left flank. Reid then sent a cross in towards the back post for Nana Attakora making a run. Attakora had a shot that hit off the post and away from goal.

A chance came for Raul Gonzalez in the 65th minute. Scott Thomsen sent Yudai Imura on a run towards the end line, with enough time to play a quick low ball into the center of the box. It looked like Brian Shriver was going to get a touch as the ball fell at the feet of Gonzalez. He went for a shot, but put it high and over the Ottawa goal.

A massive save from Brandon Barnes prevented a third goal for Fury FC. Steevan Dos Santos found space up the right flank. He sent in a low, direct cross in for Adonijah Reid in front of goal. Reid tried to go to Barnes’ right, but the Kickers keeper was able to get enough of a touch to push the ball wide and out for a corner kick.

A final chance to pull a goal back for Richmond came in the 87th minute. Ottawa looked to clear away a cross in from Evan Lee, as the ball fell to Scott Thomsen. He quickly fed the ball to Heviel Cordovés. The Cuban turned and went for a shot that forced a save out of Maxime Crépeau.

The Kickers are back on the road next Saturday night, heading down to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies September 22. Four days later, the Kickers return to City Stadium to host the Eastern Conference leading FC Cincinnati and Cider Fest. The festivities start at 5:30 p.m. with live music, RVA food trucks, and Happy Hour specials on over 20 ciders and craft beers.
