PITTSBURGH, Pa. — (Wednesday, August 1, 2018) — The Richmond Kickers (5-12-3) were defeated by Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC (10-3-7) Wednesday night at Highmark Stadium. A brace by Neco Brett, followed by a third goal from Ben Fitzpatrick gave the home side all three points.

Five minutes into the match and Pittsburgh broke the deadlock through Neco Brett. Mouhamed Dabo controlled the ball inside the Riverhounds SC end of the pitch and played the ball up the field trying to pick out Brett. Conor Shanosky was able to get a head to the ball, but it took an unlucky bounce into space for Brett to run on to. With Shanosky pressuring, Brett took a shot just inside the near post for the opener.

Trevor Spangenberg prevented the home side from doubling their lead in the 12th minute. From a free kick on the right side, Andrew Lubahn looked to find Thomas Vancaeyezeele at the back post. Spangenberg stretched to punch the ball away to prevent the chance.

Two saves in a minute by Trevor Spangenberg kept Pittsburgh off the board in the 18th minute. Neco Brett played the ball out wide left for Christiano François. He made a cut inside just before getting to the endline and went for goal as Spangenberg made the save. Later, Jordan Dover got a step ahead of Austin Yearwood to gain control on the right side and quickly fed the ball up for Noah Franke. He went for a cross into the Richmond box that took a deflection and fell to Vancaeyezeele, who headed it back to Dover in space inside the box. His shot rolled harmlessly to Spangenberg.

Giuseppe Gentile had an opportunity in the 28th minute to get the Kickers back into the match. Austin Yearwood came over to the right side for a corner kick. He floated in the ball towards the far post as Gentile leaped to try and get a head to the ball, but he could not get a clean hit on it and it sails over the goal.

The Kickers had another chance from a set piece in the 39th minute. After the Kickers won a corner kick, Austin Yearwood stepped up and tried to get the ball into the the back post. Pittsburgh keeper Dan Lynd came off his line to try and punch the ball away has it fall right for Giuseppe Gentile. He attempted to volley a shot in towards goal as Neco Brett was able to get in the way of the shot and block it away.

Raul Gonzalez had the best chance of the night so far in the 57th minute. Matt Bolduc got play started from a throw in from right in front of the Richmond bench getting the ball to Fred Owusu Sekyere. He quickly turned and played the ball ahead to Gentile. A quick touch over the top gets the ball over to Gonzalez. He split between Hugh Roberts and Andrew Lubahn and went for a shot on goal as Jordan Dover was there to deflect the shot away from the open goal.

The Riverhounds doubled their lead in the 67th minute from a Neco Brett brace. Christiano François managed to keep the ball in bounds making a run up the left flank. He played the ball slightly back for Kenardo Forbes in space in the midfield. Seeing Brett in space ahead of him, Forbes fed the ball through for Brett. He put his shot across the goal and past Spangenberg for his second of the night.

A third goal came for Pittsburgh in the 81st minute. Thomas Vancaeyezeele was well defended by Brian Shriver and Matt Bolduc. He was able to slip the ball over for Kenardo Forbes. Ben Fitzpatrick started a run up the left side of the field as Forbes was able to place a perfectly weighted through ball in for him. Going one-on-one with Spangenberg, Fitzpatrick placed his shot in towards the far post, and into the net for his first goal of the season.

With four minutes left in the match, Raul Gonzalez nearly broke through the Riverhounds defense. Austin Yearwood switched the attack getting the ball out on the right side for Heviel Cordovés. The Cuban took a touch down to get the ball to Luiz Fernando. He held the ball for a second as Gonzalez made an overlapping run into the Pittsburgh box. Gonzalez cut back to create some space for a shot, but as he went for it, Joe Greenspan slide in to deflect it away from danger.

Richmond had one more chance in the 89th minute from Matt Bolduc. Mekeil Williams reset the Kickers attack and found Brandon Eaton at the top of the box. He could not make the turn and then played it back for Brian Shriver, who then quickly went wide for Bolduc. Taking two steps to get away from both Vancaeyezeele and Fitzpatrick, Bolduc looked for the near post as his shot was just slightly off the mark and into the side netting.

The Kickers return home to City Stadium to face Bethlehem Steel FC at 7 p.m. The party starts at 5:30pm for artVA Fest with live music by The Hit List, a collaborative art zone including lessons, performances and installations by Art on Wheels, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Studio Two Three and Wine & Design, plus RVA food trucks and over a dozen craft beers on tap.
