RICHMOND, VA — The Richmond Kickers (5-6-6) faced New England Revolution II (7-7-2) for the third time this season, earning a point against the MLS-affiliate off the back of an Emiliano Terzaghi brace.

After an hour of weather delays, the starting whistle was blown, and the third matchup between the Kickers and Revs II was underway. The first 20 minutes of the match was a very level display from both sides with neither able to capitalize on their attacking opportunities.

Soon after, Nil Vinyals freed up Matt Bolduc with an incisive pass up the left flank. Bolduc floated a brilliant cross across the penalty box, Terzaghi timed his run perfectly and side-footed the ball into the back of the net, bringing the scoreline to 1-0 in the Reds favor.

As the first half unfolded, Richmond was content to play to their strengths on the counterattack. Patiently playing out from the backfield and deep in the midfield, lofting through passes into the attackers and creating dangerous opportunities moving forward, but the scoreline would remain 1-0 in Richmond’s favor.

The Kickers started the half with the same vigor that earned them the early goal. Oalex Anderson continued to be a nuisance on the wing for the New England defense, linking up with Terzaghi, Bolduc and Vinyals on the right side for several sequences. In the 53rd minute, Terzaghi received the ball outside of the box and seized an open opportunity to drill a long shot and test the New England keeper. Joe Rice got a hand to it, but the wet conditions and the sheer force of Terzaghi’s strike ensured the ball found its way into the back of the net, doubling Richmond’s lead.

Later in the 71st minute, Richmond’s new signing, Ethan Bryant, made his Richmond debut going onto the field in place of Matt Bolduc. With only a quarter of the match remaining, New England put forth its best efforts to equalize the scoreline, sending nine players into the box for a corner kick, but the Richmond defense wouldn't budge. Akira Fitzgerald would continue to add to his numerous spectacular saves on the evening.

New England would pull off an unlikely comeback in the final minutes of the match. Noel Buck found an opening to put an effort with pace on frame. The shot beat Fitzgerald and into the back of the net, earning a goal for New England, bringing the scoreline to 2-1. In the next minute, New England managed to cross a ball in from a wide area and reach Edward Kizza in the center of the box who headed it into the back of the net, bringing Revs II level with Richmond.

The fourth official signified four minutes of stoppage time for either side to pull the game in their favor. Richmond earned an opportunity to find the go-ahead from the corner, and Vinyals delivered a ball into the box that found the waiting head of Jalen Crisler. The centerback put his attempt on frame but Rice was able to make the save. The final whistle eventually blew with both sides earning a point from the intense back-and-forth match.

The Reds’ next match will be against Greenville Triumph SC down in South Carolina for the next leg of the Bon Secours Cup. The last time the two clubs faced each other was at City Stadium for Richmond’s second match of the season. The match concluded with an unfortunate loss to the reigning league title-winners, but the Kickers will have an opportunity to level the season series on August 22nd. Kickoff for the match is set for 7:00 p.m.
