Crew SC Homegrown Signing Comes to Richmond for 2019

RICHMOND, Va. – (Wednesday, March 6, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that Aboubacar Keita joins the Kickers on loan from Major League Soccer (MLS) side Columbus Crew SC for the 2019 season, pending USSF and USL League One approval.

“With a history of soccer in the state of Virginia and our knowledge of the Columbus Crew and their Academy, Bouba is a great pick up for the Richmond Kickers,” said Kickers Head Coach, David Bulow. “It was a move that makes a lot of sense for us and what we are building. I am excited to watch Bouba grow as a player, and to add a potential U.S. U-20 International player to our group.”

Born in New York, Keita was raised in Guinea in west Africa before moving to Columbus at age 10. Signing a homegrown contract with Crew SC on January 22, 2019, Keita spent one season at the University of Virginia. He played in all 17 matches in 2018 for the Cavaliers, starting every match and scored one goal while leading the team to a 10-4-3 finish and allowing just 12 goals. Keita was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team along with Top Drawer Soccer’s second-team Freshman Best XI.

Prior to joining the Kickers, the Columbus, Ohio native was called into the United States U-20 January camp as they prep for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland this Summer.

”I am really excited to be in the great city of Richmond to develop as a new pro,” commented Keita. “I am enjoying getting to know the team, happy learning from the coaches, and want to earn the league crown for the fans, especially the Red Army supporters.”

The Kickers roster is now at 14 players with the addition of Keita, including Amass Amankona, Matt Bolduc, Dennis Chin, Jannik Eckenrode, Akira Fitzgerald, Josh Hughes, Daniel Jackson, Eli Lockaby, Mutaya Mwape, Maxi Rodriguez, Conor Shanosky, Scott Thomsen, and Braeden Troyer.

“This a prime example that we want to develop players,” added Kickers President, Matt Spear. “Bouba has the right growth mindset as he launches his pro career - and a wonderful smile and demeanor that our fans will love. Working with the Columbus Crew and their Technical Director Pat Onstad is a positive partnership.”
