News and Notes:
CROSS COASTAL MATCHUP: The Kickers will take on Central Valley Fuego FC on Saturday, April 6 in the second home match of the regular season. Fuego is 1-2-0 in League One matches while the Kickers are 0-2-0.
The Kickers defeated Fuego 2-1 in their first meeting of the 2023 season, hosting the California team at City Stadium. The two teams would face each other three times across the season and ultimately split the series 1-1-1.
The Kickers saw their second win of 2024 on Tuesday, April 2 when they took on the Maryland Bobcats, a NISA side in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Four different goal scorers brought the Kickers a 5-2 win, featuring a brace from Dakota Barnathan. The Kickers will move onto round three of the tournament on April 17 when they’ll play Loudon United FC.
PLAYER OF LAST MATCH: While controlling the back line, Dakota Barnathan sent two into the back of the net during the second round of the Open Cup to earn Player of the Match recognition. He scored in the second minute of first half stoppage time off a free kick from Nil Vinyals. Once the ball was in the air, Barnathan flew in between two defenders and found it with the top of his head, sending it into the back of the net.
To make it two for himself and five for the team, Barnathan scooped up a ball that had been bouncing back and forth from Bobcat to Kicker and sent it bending around the near post. Barnathan scored in the 88th minute to put a seal on the match.
THE KIDS GO ON A CUP RUN: The Richmond Kickers had several first team players compete on Richmond United’s U20 Boys team during the USL Academy Cup this past weekend. Gabe Cox, Noah Hiort-Wright, Landon Johnson, and James Sneddon all made the trip to Tampa.
Sneddon recorded a clean sheet, Johnson scored two goals, and Cox scored one goal and assisted another.
The team earned a 3-0 win over Tampa Bay United, a 0-0 draw against Hartford Athletic, and a 4-1 win over Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Ultimately, the team finished as finalists, falling to Indy Eleven 1-0 in a gritty championship match up.
KICKERS BRING BACK A CLASSIC: The Richmond Kickers unveiled their 2024 Seeing Red Kit featuring a custom bright red Adidas jersey with white accents and red shadow pinstripes that feature white sponsor logos, nameplates, and numbers.
The Seeing Red Kit celebrates a return to the famous red that has been sported by America’s longest-continuously operating outdoor soccer club for over 30 years. From Kevin Jeffrey and Matthew Delicâte to Emilia- no Terzaghi and Nil Vinyals, repping Richmond Red has spelled success for the Kickers. Under the City Stadium lights, Kickers players and fans will see red and be reminded of the tenacity and ferocity the Richmond Kick- ers have always played with and continue to display under the direction of Chief Sporting Officer and Head Coach Darren Sawatzky.
