News and Notes:
VINYALS POTM: USL League One announced on Wednesday that Richmond Kickers’ midfielder Nil Vinyals was named the league’s March Player of the Month.
Vinyals earns his first-ever Player of the Month award from USL League One in his fifth season in the league. The recognition comes off the back of Vinyal’s Week 2 Player of the Week award in which the midfielder was instrumental in the Kickers’ 1-0 road victory over rivals Greenville Triumph SC.
During the month of March, Vinyals was the straw that stirred the Kickers’ attack. He led the team in shots on target, created chances, completed passes in the final third, and successful dribbles.
The Spaniard picked up where he left off in the 2022 season when he led the team and finished tied for third in the league in created chances. During that record-setting 2022 season, Vinyals was named Player of the Week in week 1 while notching four more placements on the Team of the Week in 2022.
TERZAGHI FINDS HIS FIRST GOALS OF 2023: During the Kickers’ Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Second Round match against Cleveland SC, Emiliano Terzaghi bagged his first brace of the 2023 season which also marked his first competitive goals of the season.
Both goals proved to be vintage Terzaghi. The first was a tap-in at the far post coming from a low-driven cross across the goal mouth while the second was a deft backheel flick from a near post run after Vinyals played a short cross into the box.
Terzaghi also notched his first assist of the season after using his head to flick the ball to the back post to a waiting Dakota Barnathan who smashed in his attempt to give the Kickers a 3-0 lead over Cleveland SC.
UNBEATEN AGAINST NoCo: Saturday marks the fourth-ever match between Richmond Kickers and Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC. The Kickers currently hold serve in the season series with a 2-0-1 record with a plus-2 goal differential. Terzaghi has scored in every match in the series so far.
The first matchup in 2022 saw the Hailstorm travel to City Stadium where they took an early lead before a second-half equalizer from Terzaghi earned a hard-fought point for the Roos. Hailstorm would return in June to lose in a 3-2 thriller that saw Vinyals, Terzaghi, and Jonathan Bolanos bag goals.
The third matchup — and first in Colorado — ended with a 1-0 win in favor of the Kickers after Terzaghi banged in a long-range effort from near midfield after catching the keeper off his line.
PUPS AT THE PITCH NIGHT: Saturday is Pups At The Pitch presented by Impawsible Pups.
While dogs are always welcome at City Stadium, it’s a special night for dogs at the stadium with Section 114 open in the seating bowl for dogs to watch the match from the stands. On the concourse, there will be a photo booth for dogs as well as a safe, temporary “tattoo” station for dogs.
The first 200 fans will receive an Impawsible Pups bike bottle.
