The Open Cup returns to City Stadium for the first time since 2019

CHICAGO – (Friday, April 8, 2022) – US Soccer announced during a live draw, Friday, that the Richmond Kickers will host USL League Two side, North Carolina Fusion U23s, in the third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The third-round schedule including matchday and kickoff times will be announced at a later date.
Drawn in the Piedmont region with Charlotte FC of the MLS, Greenville Triumph SC of USL League One, and Fusion U23s, the Roos were the first to learn that they would host an Open Cup game at City Stadium for the first time since the 2019 season. Greenville is set to host Charlotte in the third round.
The Kickers earned a third-round berth after winning 1-0 on the road against USL League Two side, Northern Virginia FC, on Wednesday night in Leesburg, Va. David Olsen scored his first goal in a Kickers shirt in his first start after converting an assist from Matthew Bentley. It also marked the second-straight clean sheet for the Roos, as Akira Fitzgerald made his second-straight start between the pipes.
Prior to the next Open Cup match, the Kickers return to City Stadium tomorrow, Saturday, April 9, to host their second match of the USL League One season. This time, they host league newcomers Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC as NoCo prepare to play their first league game in their history. The first 500 fans in the building will receive a 90s throwback tee shirt presented by RVAccess.
City Stadium will also play host to College Night for fans in attendance, and the newly-minted Division III Men’s College Basketball National Champion Randolph Macon Yellow Jackets will be honored on the field prior to kickoff.
