RICHMOND, Va.  – The Richmond Kickers (6-8-7) return to City Stadium after nearly a month away from home to host MLS-affiliate Toronto FC II on Saturday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. The match is presented by CBS 6.
 
The rematch against Toronto — this time in familiar surroundings — will allow Head Coach Darren Sawatzky full access to his squad after COVID-related travel restrictions implemented by the Canadian government prevented key internationals from traveling to BMO Training Ground.
 
Furthermore, the match kicks off a stretch of four of the team’s next five matches taking place at City Stadium. With the majority of the table congested and separated by no more than six points, as well as the Reds only three points off a playoff spot, a stretch of home cooking will prove pivotal for a squad that has taken points in nine of 10 matches so far at home.
Richmond’s last match was last week at New England Revolution II. The match started out in favor of the Reds after an early 3rd-minute goal. The Kickers held possession of the ball in their own half, Zaca Moran teed up for a long-range, weighted, diagonal-pass that fell perfectly in front of Jonathan Bolanos. Sprinting into the box after his first touch, Bolanos cut inside, beating Connor Presley and drilled a powerful shot towards the near post and into the goal. 
 
However, New England would grow into the game and find an equalizer shortly before the first half came to an end. The hosts would benefit from an unlucky bounce and find the go-ahead shortly after the second-half whistle. With the Kickers committing forward to finding their own equalizer, the Revs would find a third late on the counter. Despite the result, the Kickers finished their regular-season series with the MLS-affiliate with a 2-1-1 record.
Toronto FC II’s last match was against Forward Madison FC. The match resulted in a 1-1 draw, but Forward Madison opened the scoring near the end of the first half thanks to a goal by Ryan Sierakowski. Toronto FC II managed to come back in the 88th minute and score a goal to equalize. Toronto is currently in 10th place; just one point above Richmond going into the weekend. 

Following the match against Toronto, Richmond will host league-leading Chattanooga Red Wolves SC at City Stadium next Sautrday, October 2. Kickoff for this match is set for 6:30 p.m.

Richmond Kickers

Jonathan Bolanos (#17) scored a quick goal last week against New England within the first several minutes of the match and was a terror on the left wing, constantly causing trouble for the New England right-sided defense. Bolanos has scored four goals this season and has enjoyed good form since scoring a similar goal scored against Greenville. 

Ivan Magalhães (#4) is Richmond’s co-captain. His leadership qualities are as influential as his defensive capabilities. Magalhães leads the squad in clearances (87) and interceptions (61) and is a crucial part of the anchor that is the Richmond defensive back four. 

Zaca Moran (#6) is Richmond’s first choice, deep-lying midfielder. Moran thrives sitting in front of the Richmond backline, breaking up plays and connecting the backfield to the attacking side. His pass from his own half into Bolanos on the left wing was a spectacular pass.

Toronto FC II

Garrett McLaughlin (#49) is Toronto FC II’s leading goalscorer and has been in contention for the Golden Boot since the midpoint in the season with his eight goals scored. McLaughlin has managed to score a goal every 179.8 minutes and accumulated 42 shots and 20 shots on target this season. 

Kobe Franklin (#58) is the Toronto FC II leading assist-man. Franklin has two assists this season, a passing accuracy of 79.5%, Franklin plays as a wide winger and looks to create chances with McLaughlin.

Kevin Politz (#64) is Toronto FC II’s starting center-back. Politz leads the squad in 54 clearances and blocks with 15 and is third in the squad in interceptions with 25. Politz is a solid, composed defensive back who dominates the Toronto box.
