RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Kickers (3-3-2) and Forward Madison FC (3-1-3) played to a scoreless draw Saturday night as the Reds earned their fourth clean sheet of the season.
Richmond started the match off with Jonathan Bolanos making a dashing run up the left-wing beating his defender. Bolanos made his way into Forward Madison’s penalty box and got a shot off, but newly-signed goalkeeper Chris Brady was able to deflect the shot away from the goal. The remainder of the first half would be an intense display of physical fortitude from both sides, with neither side able to create any clear-cut opportunities. The first half of the match would end up 0-0.
The second half opened up following suit to the intensity of the first 45 minutes. A physical battle between both sides made it difficult for either squad to get in behind or create space in the opposition’s final third. The head official had a busy second half as she went to her book five times with four cautions being issued to Forward Madison and one to the Reds.
In the 73rd minute, Forward Madison sent a lobbed pass into Richmond’s box but Akira Fitzgerald came to calmly collect it and clear any danger. Shortly after, Oalex Anderson went on an explosive run from deep in Richmond’s own half beating most of Forward Madison’s team in a full-on sprint, but their last ditch defender was able to quell the counter attack.
Rolling into the 80th minute, Oalex Anderson received the ball at the top of the Madison box and let loose a shot on goal, but it went just over the crossbar. Despite the six extra minutes of stoppage time allotted, neither side would be able to successfully close out the match with a goal, resulting in the first scoreless Henny Derby.
Victor Falck, Ivan Magalhães, Jalen Crisler and Esteban Calvo all finished the match with a passing accuracy of 86% or higher and Magalhães led the team with 43 good passes and crosses. Bolanos, Magalhães, Crisler and Terzaghi each registered a shot on target in the outing.
Richmond’s next match is against league leaders Union Omaha on June 19th. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m. ET.
