RICHMOND, Va. — (Saturday, August 15, 2020) — The Richmond Kickers (2-1-1) picked up their second-straight win Saturday night at City Stadium, taking a 2-1 victory over FC Tucson (1-3-0). Ivan Magalhães scored his first goal for the Kickers after just seven minutes. Emiliano Terzaghi doubled the Richmond lead in the 42nd minute, scoring in his second-straight match. Tucson would get a consolation goal in the 82nd minute from Shak Adams.
Ivan Magalhães scored his first goal in a Richmond shirt after just seven minutes. Roberto Alarcon was whistled for a foul on Scott Thomsen, setting up a free kick opportunity for the Kickers on the edge of the Tucson box. Mutaya Mwape stepped up and dropped in a perfect ball for Magalhães at the penalty spot. He placed his header towards the inside of the post and out of the reach of Carlos Merancio to put the Kickers up 1-0.
Three minutes later, Akira Fitzgerald came up big for Richmond. Elivelton won the ball in the midfield and started a run from goal. He tried a long range effort to test the Richmond keeper, but Fitzgerald was quick to react for the save.
Richmond had a near scare in the 37th minute. Shak Adams broke free on the left wing. Going one on one with Kyle Venter, Adams looked to whip in a cross. The ball took an odd deflection off Venter, arching over Fitzgerald and the Kickers goal.
Just before halftime Richmond would double their lead through the team leading scorer, Emiliano Terzaghi. Scott Thomsen got to the endline to send in a cross for Luke Pavone inside the Tucson box. His shot was saved by a miraculous dive from Merancio. The ball rolled out for Matt Bolduc at the top of the box. He quickly found Ryley Kraft, who turned enough to slip the ball to Terzaghi, as the Argentine made no mistake finding the back of the net in his second-straight match and third time overall this season.
The Kickers nearly came away with a third goal in the 57th minute. From a corner kick, Kraft floated in a corner kick towards goal. Seeing it bend in on frame, Merancio needed to palm it away from danger. Instead the ball fell to the feet of Pavone at the back post. On a tough angle, he looked for a shot on frame as his shot skipped across the face of goal.
Tucson looked to pull a goal back in the 66th minute. Coming in off the bench, Azaadi Liadi controlled the ball on the right wing and quickly turned towards the Richmond goal. His shot went beyond the far post despite Fitzgerald covering the goal.
The visitors would find their goal in the 81st minute. Tommy Silva controlled the ball on the left side and squared a pass to Charlie Dennis sitting at the top of the 18. As he was making a run trying to find space, he poked the ball ahead to Shak Adams. He went for the quick shot, sliding it under Fitzgerald.
A last ditch save from Magalhães helped to prevent a second goal by Tucson. A cross came in from Darryl Longdon, picking out Silva in space inside the Richmond box. Magalhães came out quickly to shut down the chance right as Silva struck the ball.
