RICHMOND, VA — (Saturday, August 19, 2017) — The Richmond Kickers (4-12-8) scored a goal in each half to pick up their fourth win of the season after a 2-1 victory of Toronto FC II (4-16-6). Jordan Hamilton scored first for Toronto in the fourth minute, as goals from Sunny Jane two minutes later followed by a 68th minute game winner from Matt Bolduc rounded out the scoring.
Toronto would go ahead in the 4th minute through Jordan Hamilton. Braeden Troyer was called for a foul in the right side corner after a challenge on Oyvind Alseth. Brian James and Ryan Telfer stood over the free kick, with Telfer playing a low driving cross into the near post to find Hamilton. He controlled and slotted the ball inside the near post to give the visitors the lead.
The Kickers would not be outdone, leveling the score just two minutes later as Sunny Jane scored his first of the season. Matt Bolduc held off his defender enough to play the ball out wide right to Alex Lee. Lee took a touch and then sent a cross in to find Jane in the middle of the Toronto box. He put his header on goal, as Cavalluzzo was able to get a touch to the ball and push it into the crossbar and back down for the tying goal.
Travis Worra made a save in the 16th minute to prevent another goal for Toronto. Mitchell Taintor brought the ball up the field and found Malik Johnson open at the top of the Richmond box just left of the goal. Johnson cut inside and sent a shot in towards the near post as Worra dove to make the save.
Yudai Imura nearly connected with Sunny Jane for his second goal of the game in the 32nd minute. Luiz Fernando chipped the ball just enough to get it through the Toronto backline for Yudai Imura making a run up the right side. Imura played a one-time cross towards the near post intended for Jane as Brandon Aubrey beat him to the ball and cleared it for a Richmond corner kick.
Jordan Hamilton tried to get his second of the night in the 52nd minute. Hamilton broke through the Kickers backline to go one on one with Worra coming in from the right side. He tried to place his shot towards the far post as Worra stretched to deny his shot and Evan Lee could clear the ball away.
Five minutes later and it would be the post that would deny Luiz Fernando a chance to give Richmond the lead. Yudai Imura started to come up the left side from the center stripe. He looked to play the ball up the field for Fred Owusu Sekyere. He played a quick back heel for Luiz Fernando as he made a run into the box. Fernando created enough space for a shot as he dinged it off the near post and out for a goal kick.
Matt Bolduc scored his first goal of the season in the 68th minute to give Richmond the lead. Braeden Troyer from the Richmond end of the field played the ball over the top for Franck Tayou as he was getting into the Toronto box. Tayou could not control his footing and fell leaving the ball open as Bolduc came in from the right side. Brandon Onkony tried to get to the ball as Bolduc was just a step ahead and put his shot in to the near post, taking a slight deflection off Brandon Aubrey and in for what would be the game winner.
The Kickers continues their 25-year rivalry with the Charleston Battery at City Stadium next Saturday night along with Food Truck Fest. The party starts at 5:30 p.m. with live music by Jive 45, over a dozen craft beers on tap, and RVA’s iconic food trucks, including Carytown Burgers & Fries, Sticks Kebob Shop, Grapevine, The Return of the Mac, Mr. Softee, Happy Empanada, Ms. Funnel Cakes and Boka Truck.
