RICHMOND, Va – (Saturday, May 17, 2017) – The Richmond Kickers bow out of the 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, falling to Christos FC (Md.) after a goal from Geaton Caltabiano gave the visitors their second road victory of the tournament.
Christos FC tried to get the front-foot on the attack in the 7th minute. Daniel Baxter and Paul Caringi III combined at the top of the Kickers box looking for an opportunity. Conor Shanosky was able to get a toe to the ball as Anthony Grant cleared it away.
Richmond would have several chances in the 10th minute. Braeden Troyer won the ball just inside the Christos half and played it over the top out wide to Oliver Minatel. Minatel’s cross in was slightly deflected by Christos FC goalkeeper Phil Saunders and fell to the feet of Troyer. His shot would get punched away by Saunders as well, this time falling to Mikey Minutillo. Cody Albrecht got in the way of Minutillo’s chance.
Oliver would have the best chance for Richmond in the first half, putting a shot just wide of goal. Minutillo won the ball on the edge of the Christos box, pushing his way through and finding Anthony Grant at the near post. Grant was not able to control his shot and laid the ball off for an onrushing Oliver. His shot would end up rolling just wide after a slight deflection save by Saunders.
Kaoru Forbess nearly gave the visitors the advantage in the 37th minute with a long-range effort. Juan Perrerira started the play off trying to find Caringi at the top of the box. Troyer blocked the pass from meeting Caringi, but it ended up falling dangerously to Forbess. His one time effort from nearly missed DeBellis goal.
Anthony Grant came close to giving Richmond the lead just before the halftime break in the 42nd minute. William Yomby from midfield found Finnlay Wyatt making a run out wide into space. Wyatt was able to get a cross in to the far post and find Grant. He would not be able to control his shot, sending it high over the Christos goal.
Paul Caringi III would again become an offensive threat in the 56th minute. Joseph Glos found Caringi at the top of the Kickers box and he put a header towards goal. DeBellis noticed the ball to be more dangerous than initially anticipated and was able to get a hand to it to push it out for a corner kick. Just a minute later, Fisher found Baxter crashing the box to get a shot off that DeBellis would control.
The visitors would take find a way to take the lead. Geaton Caltabiano entered the match in the 76th minute, taking the place of Elton Joe. Albrecht stepped up from his defensive position to win the ball in the midfield, getting it quickly to Caltabiano. He slotted the ball through to Graham inside the Kickers box. Graham just need to square the ball back to Caltabiano and he would just need to direct the ball into a nearly open net as DeBellis was off his line.
Just a minute into making his debut for the Kickers, Matt Bolduc controlled a ball inside the Christos box after Wyatt played a cross in to find him making his run. His shot would end up getting saved off the line by Albrecht, preserving the cleansheet for Christos FC.
Even with outshooting the opposition 22-10, the Kickers would not be able to find the back of the net and fell in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Kickers return to action Sunday, May 21 when they travel for their first of a three-match road trip as they travel to the Rochester Rhinos for a 4:05pm kickoff. The match will be available to stream through the USL Matchcenter at uslsoccer.com/match-center.
