RICHMOND, VA – (Monday, December 5, 2016) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that midfielder Fred Owusu Sekyere will return for the 2017 season, pending USL and U.S. Soccer approval.
“Owusu has been an exceptional performer since returning to Richmond two years ago,” commented Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Director of Soccer. “He’s developed into a well-respected leader within the squad with a wealth of USL experience.”
Anchoring the midfield in 61 games over two seasons, Owusu Sekyere has amassed over 3,600 minutes with the Kickers. Leading the team with seven assists in 2015, he contributed two assists en route to a USL Eastern Conference Quarterfinals finish in 2016.
A standout at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2006 to 2009, Owusu Sekyere led RVA FC of the National Premier Soccer League to the 2013 National Championship before signing a professional contract with the Charlotte Eagles. The Ghanaian midfielder made 28 appearances in Charlotte in 2014, boasting over 2,000 minutes in an Eagles uniform while contributing two goals and three assists.
Owusu Sekyere joins 10 players currently under contract for the Kickers upcoming 25th Anniversary season including Samuel Asante, Jackson Eskay, Luiz Fernando, Anthony Grant, Yudai Imura, Sunny Jane, Alex Lee, Conor Shanosky, Braeden Troyer and William Yomby.
