LOUISVILLE, KY– (Sunday, October 2, 2016) – Richmond Kickers bowed out of the USL Eastern Conference quarterfinals tonight, despite a brave performance in Louisville.
The Kickers, who had Samuel Asante sent off after just four minutes, defended outstandingly for the first 90 minutes, but were undone by two overtime goals from George Davis IV and Chandler Hoffman.
Andrew Dykstra made a string of excellent saves to keep Richmond’s hopes alive in regulation, but could do little to prevent former Richmond forward Davis IV and Louisville top scorer Hoffman from sending the Kentucky side into the semifinals.
Richmond’s evening changed at the click of a finger after just four minutes as Samuel Asante saw straight red for a midriff challenge on Louisville’s Magnus Rasmussen.
Determined not to lay down and crumble, Richmond’s Brian Ownby had a sight of goal moments after the dismissal but lashed over Jason Yeisley’s knockdown.
On a tight pitch, Yeisley’s physical presence was a huge outlet for Richmond throughout, and it was from a restart that the Kickers very nearly took a 13th minute lead.
Scott Thomsen’s driven corner was met by the head of William Yomby, only to be saved superbly by Trinidad & Tobago international Greg Ranjitsingh.
Alex Lee then received a yellow card after a high challenge on Mark Anthony Kaye and from the ensuing free kick, Dykstra did well to save Cameron Lancaster’s dangerous set piece that evaded several flying bodies in the penalty box.
The Richmond shotstopper had a heart in the mouth moment just a minute later, after dropping a corner kick, but was rescued by his valiant defense, who cleared the danger.
Louisville then made a surprise substitution in the 33rd minute, taking off the in-form Magnus Rasmussen for top scorer Hoffman.
Dykstra further demonstrated his excellent handling skills when he brilliantly sprawled to hold Aodhan Quinn’s curling 37th minute freekick.
Kickers had another golden opportunity in the 40th minute. Fred Owusu Sekyere’s free kick was only partially cleared by Ranjitsingh, and after Braeden Troyer’s quick-thinking header, Yomby saw a delicate volleyed backheel cleared en route to goal by the Louisville defense.
Deep into stoppage time in the first half, Kadeem Dacres had a golden chance inside the box, but smashed his effort high and wide when more composure was needed.
Yomby almost scored an audacious goal from just inside the half-way line at the start of the second half following a mazy run, before Dykstra held Cameron Lancaster’s deflected effort in the 50th minute.
The shotstopper was then at his best to save Quinn’s sweetly-struck effort in the 61st minute, before Dacres’ carbon-copy minutes later effort crept wide.
Kickers introduced Yudai Imura into the game midway through the second half, and he started the game by heading Paco Craig’s header off the goal-line in the 69th minute.
Dysktra continued to frustrate Louisville as the second half dragged on, saving well from Ilija Ilic and others as it looked like the Kickers could hold out in overtime.
But former Kickers man Davis IV had other ideas. Just moments into the restart, he burst onto Quinn’s clever pass and shot into the far corner of the net, underneath Dysktra.
Worse was to come for Richmond in the 102nd minute as Hoffman latched onto Dacres’ pinpoint pass and finished to ultimately seal Louisville’s passage into the semifinals, where they will play Charleston Battery.
