FC Montreal 1 (Riggi 87’)
Richmond Kickers 2 (Fernando 63’, Imura 88’)
MONTREAL, CANADA – The Richmond Kickers (11-6-5) made it six wins in a row as they beat FC Montreal (2-18-1) 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Richmond took the lead in the second half through Luiz Fernando before Alessandro Riggi equalized for FC Montreal. Immediately following the Montreal goal, Yudai Imura found the winner to score his ninth of the season.
In the 20th minute, the Kickers came close to finding the opener. Sunny Jane fired a low strike from outside the box that Montreal keeper, Max Crepeau, saved, but only as far as Samuel Asante, who would try and put the rebound in, but Crepeau was able to make himself big and collect the ball.
Montreal had a great opportunity in the 25th minute. A low cross came from the left side of the box that was met by Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla, who rifled a shot first time, that struck the side of the goal.
Luiz Fernando created a great opportunity in the 28th minute. Fernando beat his defender on the left side and played a ball across the goal, which was met by Samuel Asante, whose shot went just wide of Montreal’s goal.
New England Revolution loanee keeper, Matt Turner, made two massive saves in the early stages of the second half to keep the scores level. Both sides pushed for the opening goal as the game became more open.
The Kickers then took the lead in the 63rd minute. Richmond debutant, Scott Thomsen, found space on the left flank and crossed the ball toward Luiz Fernando in the box. Fernando’s initial shot was saved by Max Crepeau, but Fernando was able to react the quickest to the rebound and roof the ball into the Montreal net. That marked Luiz Fernando’s first USL goal for the Kickers, giving Richmond a 1-0 lead.
Montreal equalized in the 87th minute after Alessandro Riggi was brought down in the box. Riggi stepped up to take the penalty kick and slotted the ball in the right corner to make the score 1-1.
Immediately from the kickoff, the Kickers responded. Luiz Fernando received the ball in the box from Michael Callahan and crossed the ball from the end line across the six-yard box where Yudai Imura tapped the ball in to score his sixth goal in his last five games and ninth of the season to give the Kickers a 2-1 lead.
With that victory, the Kickers have increased their win streak to six games. Richmond will look to continue their win streak when they host FC Cincinnati on Saturday, August 13 at City Stadium. Tickets are on sale now at www.richmondkickers.com.
