PITTSBURGH, PA — (July 14, 2016) — The Richmond Kickers (7-6-5) picked up their second road win in a row over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (2-10-4) Thursday night following a two-hour delay. Yudai Imura scored from the penalty spot in the first half, followed by a second half goal from Sunny Jane to seal the victory for the Kickers.
Both teams had great opportunities in the first half but both keepers came up big.
Sunny Jane almost scored the opener just two minutes into the game from a free kick. Jane took the free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and forced Riverhounds goalkeeper, Mauricio Vargas, to make a save, resulting in a corner.
Richmond debuted goalkeeper Travis Worra, on loan from D.C. United and in the 38th minute, he came up with a big save to deny Moloto’s shot.
The Kickers were awarded a penalty kick at the end of the first half. Braden Troyer played a ball into the box that found Hugh Roberts, but he would be taken down and Richmond were awarded the spot kick. Yudai Imura stepped up to take the penalty and slotted the ball to the right side of the net, scoring his fourth goal of the season to give the Kickers a 1-0 lead at half.
Richmond would continue with the pressure to start the second half, following a two-hour weather delay and power outage at the stadium. Samuel Asante and Luke Mishu would see most of the action on the right-hand side of the field.
Anthony Grant nearly doubled the Kickers lead in the 58th minute. Michael Callahan sprung Luiz Fernando on a run up the side line towards the endline. Fernando would deliver a cross in towards goal looking for Grant, but it was just too far ahead and Pittsburgh would be able to clear.
The Kickers would find a second goal in the 67th minute from a brilliant run from Sunny Jane. Again, Callahan would be in the place to set up the run. After collecting the ball deep inside his half, Callahan thread the ball through to Jane still on the Kickers end of the field. Jane was able to keep away from two defenders and launch a shot from the top of the Pittsburgh box and into the lower right corner of the goal.
Pittsburgh looked to get back into the match in the in the 79th minute, after a foul was called on Luke Mishu on the endline. Kevin Kerr stepped up to deliver the free kick into the box. Worra was able to get a fist to the ball and it landed at the feet of second half substitute, Fred Owusu Sekyere, and he cleared it away.
The Kickers will be back at City Stadium on July 16 to host Premier League side, Swansea City. Tickets are on sale now at www.richmondkickers.com.
