FT. LAUDERDALE, FL – The Richmond Kickers were knocked out of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on penalties to the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers Wednesday at Broward College – South Camus. The Strikers took an early lead but Kickers equalized in 25th minute through Yudai Imura. After 120 minutes of play the teams remained even and the game was decided on penalties, which the Strikers won 2-0.
The Strikers took the lead in the second minute from Manny Gonzalez. The Strikers player scored from a free kick just outside the Kickers’ penalty box, giving Ft. Lauderdale a 1-0 lead.
The Kickers responded in the 32nd minute with a goal of their own. Anthony Grant stole the ball from the Strikers defense, and played the through ball to Yudai Imura, who tapped the ball in, making the score 1-1.
Just two minutes into extra time, the Strikers thought they had broke the deadlock, Maicon Santos found the back of the net following a cross, but the referee deemed the forward to be in an offside position.
The last 15 minutes of extra time saw both teams going for the win. Both keepers in Diego Restrepo, of the Strikers, and Charlie Horton, of the Kickers, were tested late in the game but were able to keep the ball out of the net.
With the game tied after 120 minutes of the play, the game was decided on penalties. Ft. Lauderdale goalkeeper, Diego Restrepo was able to save three of the Kickers penalties, Horton was able to save one but was not enough as Ft. Lauderdale advanced to play D.C. United in the Foruth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a score of 2-0.
