TORONTO, CANADA – The Richmond Kickers fell to Toronto FC II 1-0 on Wednesday, May 11 at the Ontario Soccer Centre. Toronto made the breakthrough in the 75th minute through Sal Bernal. The Kickers pushed for a late equalizer, but were unable to find the back of the net. This marks the Kickers eighth game of the season and second game in five days.
In the 14th minute of the game, the Kickers had the best chance of the first half. Forward, Jason Yeisley, laid the ball back to Yuida Imura at the top of the box who then slipped the ball through to Brian Ownby one-on-one with Toronto keeper, Quillan Roberts, but his effort was saved. The rebound then fell kindly to Yudai Imura, whose first time shot was cleared off the line by the Toronto defender, Nick Hagglund.
The Kickers continued to threaten the Toronto goal when Jason Yeisley tested the keeper again in the 22nd minute. Yeisley picked up the ball at the the top of the box he then cut back onto his right foot and curled the ball towards the far right corner of the goal, but Roberts was able to dive to his left and save well.
Raheem Edwards had the best chance for Toronto FC II in the opening 45 minutes. Anthony Osorio received the ball on the left wing in space and crossed the ball into the box, finding Edwards whose first time shot was blocked by Hugh Roberts, but the rebound fell again to Edwards who struck the ball just over Matt Turner’s crossbar.
The second half of the game saw a slow start with both sides creating the majority of the chances late in the game. Toronto set the pace for the second half, Bubacarr Jobe tested Richmond goalkeeper Matt Turner in the 57th minute. Jobe’s cross from the right wing forced Turner to punch the ball over the net for a Toronto corner kick.
Matt Turner was once again called to action when Toronto forward, Jordan Hamilton, forced him to make a great save. After running across the penalty box, Hamilton struck the ball with his left foot, Turner was able to react quickly by palming the ball with his left hand before Braeden Troyer was able to clear the ball away from the danger.
Toronto FC II scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute. Toronto took free kick from inside their own half, finding Toronto substitute Salvador Bernal in the Kickers’ final third. He then carried the ball into the box, cut back on his right foot and slotted the ball in the left corner past Matt Turner, giving Toronto FC II a 1-0 lead.
Lucas Paulini then had an opportunity to equalize in the 85th minute. After good footwork in the middle of the field, he found himself with space 30-yards from goal and fired a shot that went just wide of Toronto’s goal.
Kickers continued to push for the equalizer, a dangerous cross in the box from Braeden Troyer found substitute, Romulu Peretta, at the far post who set the ball back towards the six-yard box to Samuel Asante, who headed the ball towards goal, past the goalkeeper, but was once again cleared off the line by the Toronto defense.
In the 95th minute Kickers had one last opportunity, Kickers put the ball into the box finding Hugh Roberts in the six-yard box, but he was unable to head the ball down towards goal and headed just over the woodwork. Toronto FC II recorded a 1-0 victory over the Richmond Kickers. The Kickers travel to New York Red Bull II this Saturday at 4 p.m.
