Richmond Kickers 1 (Yeisley 34’)
University of Virginia 0
RICHMOND, VA – The Richmond Kickers earned their second preseason win of 2016 with a 1-0 victory over the University of Virginia in front of a sold out crowd at Ukrop Park. The home side scored the only goal in the match in the 34th minute through Jason Yeisley’s finish.
The Kickers almost saw themselves in front after only 30 seconds when Brian Ownby found himself in a good position in the box before firing just wide of UVA’s goal.
The hosts continued with the early pressure and almost found the opening goal when Jason Yeisley’s cross found Ownby on the six-yard box, whose shot then forced a save from UVA keeper, Jeff Caldwell.
The Kickers finally made the breakthrough in the 34th minute. After winning the ball in the midfield, Yudai Imura slipped the ball behind the Cavaliers defense and found Jason Yeisley one on one with the goalkeeper before he calmly placed the ball in the back of the net past the UVA keeper.
The second half saw UVA grow more into the game with both sides sharing possession of the ball. Virginia’s best chance came in the 55th minute following a foul in a 35-yards from goal. From the ensuing free kick Richmond goalkeeper, Ryan Taylor, was easily able to collect the cross and clear the danger.
Richmond then made six substitutes in the 71st minute. The Kickers best chance of the second half came in the 89th minute. Richmond trialist Jackson Eskay collected the ball just inside the box and slotted the ball with his left foot towards the far corner, only to see UVA goalkeeper, Adam Prevost, parry his shot.
The Kickers will be playing their next preseason game on March 16th when they host the Carolina RailHawks at City Stadium. Tickets are available now at www.richmondkickers.com.
