Rivals for over two decades, Wednesday’s match marks the 54th meeting between the Kickers and the Battery with the Kickers taking the slight advantage on the 24-22-7 all-time series record. Most recently, the two clubs battled to a 2-2 draw at City Stadium in May. Midfielder Brian Ownby gave the Kickers a first half lead but the Battery responded with two quick goals by Zach Prince and Ricky Garbanzo after the break, forcing Richmond’s all-time leading scorer, Matthew Delicâte, into action to tally the late equalizer.
Currently residing in third place in the Eastern Conference standings, the Kickers moved within a point of second-place Charleston last weekend as Jason Yeisley led the home side with a goal and an assist. First, Yeisley made an acrobatic finish to put the Kickers up 1-0 in the third minute, and then set up Delicate for his sixth goal of the season as Richmond took a two-goal lead inside the opening 25 minutes. After allowing a second half goal, the Kickers weathered late pressure to claim the full three points.
Meanwhile, Charleston extended their regular season record to 6-1-4 after a dramatic 1-1 draw in Wilmington last week. Left short-handed when Dane Kelly was ejected in the 26th minute, the Battery conceded a second half tally before a last-gasp own goal leveled the score on the road.
The two teams close out the three-game regular season series in Richmond on August 29. Following Wednesday’s match, the Kickers return to City Stadium to host Food Truck Fest and FC Montreal on Saturday, June 13. Tickets are on sale now at www.richmondkickers.com.
