Fourteen current Kickers players and eight former Kickers players led Cosby High School to a historic VHSL Group AAA Championship last Saturday. Scoreless through regulation and overtime against the Broad Run Spartans, Cosby earned top honors after a nail-biting penalty kick shootout. Cosby goalkeeper and Kickers U17 Elite player, Blayne Fink, made a pair of saves, with her teammates scoring three goals to become the first Central Region team to take the AAA crown.
Throughout the game, Cosby created several opportunities to break the deadlock. Kickers players Tessa and Toryn Broadwater tirelessly threatened the Spartans’ defense, but could not elude Broad Run keeper Haley Casanova.
In the second sudden death period, Kelly Kampfmueller was through to an open goal after Casanova made an attempt at a Gina D’Orazio centering pass, but Kampfmueller got too much under the ball and put it over the net.
After a scoreless 100 minutes, the game came down to one-on-one with the goalkeepers.
Annette Nowicki and Tessa Broadwater gave Cosby a 2-1 lead after Fink stopped Broad Run’s Darbie Kelley. Cosby’s Madi Conyers and Broad Run’s Erin Brady both missed before Lizzy Patrick buried the final penalty kick to cement Cosby’s victory.
Congratulations to the Richmond Kickers U17 Girls Tessa Broadwater, Blayne Fink, Madi Conyers, Jayden Metzger, Gina D’Orazio, and Kelly Kampfmueller, Kickers U16 Girls Toryn Broadwater, Hannah Cornman, Carly McBain, Carly Maglio and Rachel Moon and Kickers 15 Girls Madison Powell, Alex McAllister and Taylor Hudgins and former Kickers Lizzy Patrick, Emma Manis, Chloe Starnes, Charis Starnes, Cana Starnes, Jordan Nunn, Devon Peck and Annette Nowicki!
