“If there is any chance of getting Henry (Kalungi) back at Proline, the door will always be open,” Head Coach Abdallah Mubiru said of the Cranes defender whose loan spell at the club ended at the start of this month. The 23-year-old Kalungi has been around for six months, and his performances in the yellow-and purple jersey speak volumes.
He played for ten league games for the team (880 minutes), missing out on some others due to Fufa’s delay in issuing him a players’ license, and later, being locked-up with the national team.
Kalungi also captained the team on seven occasions, including sweet victories over giants KCC FC (his former side) and Express FC. He only lost two games (both to Bunamwaya) and was man-of-the-match on two occasions. His debut, a 2-2 draw against Champions URA saw Proline score its first league goals of the season in five games.
“I have known him for many years and his game has tremendously improved. He is a hardworking lad, a team player and above all, he is willing to learn,” added Mubiru, who coached a young Kalungi during his teen years at Kibuli Secondary School, where he was also captain. “As the captain, he has instilled a winning mentality into the young players and they have leant a lot from him. He is down to earth and friendly to all of them. I can only wish him the best and pray that he can join us again next-season.” Mubiru also tipped Kalungi to stake his claim in the national team. “He is a fantastic player who can play for the national team for many years to come. He has already proved that after being nominated to captain the Cranes against South Sudan. Although the game was never played, Coach Bobby Williamson had shown his trust in him. His involvement in the Congo-Brazzaville game was not by mistake, he had worked for it.”
Proline Director Mujib Kasule could not agree anymore: “Kalungi is one of the best players we have had this season, despite playing a few games. His talent will see him play at the highest level in Europe someday in future. We shall be glad to have him again next season but we shall first have to talk to him and his club (Richmond Kickers). Otherwise we wish him the best and thank him for his service to the club,” said Mujib. Kalungi returns to the United States on Saturday.
