Richmond, VA – (Monday, October 3, 2011) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that defender Henry Kalungi will join Proline FC of the Ugandan Super League on loan. Kalungi is under contract with the Kickers for the 2012 season and will return to the club for preseason in February.
“This is a great opportunity for me to go back home and play for an organized club in Uganda like Proline,” commented Kalungi. “The head coach, Mujibu Kasule, is like a big brother to me and he has always guided me throughout my career. I am thankful that God has given me the opportunity to spend time with my family and with the kids at the Uganda Youth Soccer Academy.”
Proline FC is based near Kalungi’s hometown of Kampala, Uganda and is a member of the top division of the Federation of Uganda Football Association, the Ugandan Super League.
Kalungi recently re-signed for his fourth season with the Richmond Kickers after leading the backline to one of the best defensive performances in USL PRO during the 2011 season. Contributing to 12 shutouts overall, the Kickers defense allowed the league’s second-best 21 goals en route to the USL PRO and Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Semifinals. Kalungi has started 78 of 78 appearances in a Kickers uniform over the last three seasons and earned his first call-up with the Uganda National Team for an African Cup of Nations 2012 qualifier match against Guinea Bissau last June.
A 2009 Winthrop University graduate, Kalungi is an advocate for youth player development and is the co-founder of the Uganda Youth Soccer Academy, which is a community based soccer academy established to offer opportunities to the disadvantaged youth of Uganda through soccer and education. In addition to his outreach abroad, he also acts as a coach for the Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club Advanced Development Program (ADP) and Richmond Kickers Little KICKS program.
