Richmond, VA – (Wednesday, June 8, 2011) – The Richmond Kickers travel to Belson Stadium, on the campus of St. John’s University, this Sunday, June 12 to take on FC New York at 7:30 p.m. The Kickers return home to Richmond City Stadium two days later to host the Dayton Dutch Lions in the First Round of the 2011 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. “June will prove to be a busy and entertaining month as we compete both in regular season and U.S. Open Cup games,” commented Leigh Cowlishaw, Richmond Kickers Head Coach and Director of Soccer. “Fortunately, our squad is close to full strength as Henry Kalungi returns from International duty with Uganda and Mike Callahan and Gerson dos Santos are nearing full fitness. New York will be a tough start as they have performed exceptionally well in their last few games.”
The Kickers return to regular season action after the removal of the Puerto Rico Soccer League teams from the 2011 schedule left the Kickers with a two-week midseason break. The Kickers and FC New York swap home field advantage this Sunday, having last met in Richmond on May 28. Despite leading on two occasions, the Kickers were unable to seal a victory over their National Division opponents last month, who rallied behind a pair of Graciano Brito tallies to earn a 2-2 draw.
After going 1-5-2 to start the season, FC New York has since gone undefeated, claiming their second win of their inaugural USL PRO campaign on May 30 over USL PRO powerhouse Rochester Rhinos. Four days later, they handed the Charleston Battery a 1-1 draw, with Brito proving to be the hero once again with the second half equalizer.
Recently bursting onto the scoring scene, Brito resides in third place in the league in the goals scored category, having registered five goals in his last six appearances. Kickers prolific goal-scorer Matthew Delicâte continues to hold second place with six goals and tops USL PRO in the points category with 15.
