TORONTO — (Friday, June 15, 2019) — The Richmond Kickers (5-9-3) won their second straight match, taking a 2-1 road victory at Toronto FC II (6-6-5) Friday afternoon. Toronto jumped ahead in the 19th minute through Matthew Srbely. The Kickers would level the score when a free kick from Scott Thomsen slipped through the Toronto keeper’s hands in the 35th minute. Josh Hughes sealed the three points for Richmond in the 48th minute, putting away a deflected penalty save.

Toronto broke the deadlock in the 19th minute through Matthew Srbely. Griffin Dorsey fed the ball up the right wing for Luca Petrasso. He played in a cross towards the near post for Noble Okello, who kept moving the ball across the face of goal. Srbely pounced on the loose ball. He placed his shot back into the far post and into the back of the net.

Richmond had two chances to pull a goal back starting in the 30th minute. Dennis Chin sent in a cross and nearly connected with Joe Gallardo going for a bicycle kick. The ball fell loose for Scott Thomsen to run onto, having his shot deflected out. After Toronto cleared the ball out, the Kickers went on the attack again. Josh Hughes found enough space to slip Matt Bolduc through the Toronto backline, as he was not able to get enough on his shot and Eric Klenofsky picked it up.

The Kickers would get on the scoresheet off a free kick from Scott Thomsen. Wahab Ackwei was brought down on the right wing, about 30 yards from goal. Scott Thomsen stepped up to take the free kick, arching in his kick forcing Eric Klenofsky to come out for the ball. It ended up slipping through his hands and across the line to tie it up.

Josh Hughes scored his second goal of the season in the 48th minute. Joe Gallardo was tripped up from behind to draw the penalty. Gallardo took the penalty as Klenofsky came away with the save. Josh Hughes got to the deflected shot and put it into the back of the net to put Richmond ahead 2-1.

Joe Rice had to come up with a massive save in the 53rd minute. Matthew Srbely found enough space to go for a shot from about 25 yards out. Rice leaped to his left to parry away the shot and deny the home side a second.

Five minutes later, Rice needed to come up with a stop once again. Jordan Faria made a run up the left wing, sending in a cross to Noble Okello. He leapt to get a head on the shot, sending it straight down and having Rice diving to make the save on the goal line.

A long range effort from Luca Petrasso was denied by Joe Rice. Petrasso picked up an errant pass from Noble Okello in the midfield and took a touch into space and launched a rocket of a shot from about 40 yards out. Rice made the acrobatic save, preventing the ball from finding the upper 90.

Richmond gets a week off next week, returning to action Saturday, August 10 as they make their first trip to Breese Stevens Field to take on Forward Madison FC. Kickoff for that match is at 8:00 p.m. ET and will be available to stream on ESPN+. Stay up to date with all of the Kickers news at RichmondKickers.com.
