RICHMOND, Va. — The Kickers prepare to host Northern Colorado Hailstorm FC for their second-straight USL League One match at City Stadium to cap off a week that will see the Roos play three matches in seven days. The match is presented by RVAccess.
The 2022 season opened on April 2 when the Kickers hosted their playoff rivals from the 2021 season, FC Tucson. The Kickers earned a 4-0 victory as Nil Vinyals put in a Man of the Match-earning performance with two goals and one assist. Emiliano Terzaghi scored the first goal of the USL League One season, and Matthew Bentley scored a near-post goal that earned the league’s goal of the week for week 1.
Vinyals, Terzaghi, Akira Fitzgerald, and Stephen Payne were named to the league’s team of the week while Vinyals was named the player of the week.
The Kickers then made their return to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup on Wednesday, April 6. It was the first time the team played in the tournament under Head Coach Darren Sawatzky. The Roos made the trip up to Leesburg, Va. to face Northern Virginia FC.
David Olsen scored his first goal for the club in his first start off of an assist from Matthew Bentley. Despite the hosts turning the match into a rock fight, the Kickers kept their cool and held on for a 1-0 victory.
Northern Colorado will play its first USL League One match in its history. The visitors played their first match in the US Open Cup during the week and earned a 1-0 victory over USL Championship side, Colorado Switchbacks FC.
