HAMPTON ROADS - (Saturday, July 5, 2008) - The Hampton Roads Piranhas scored a pair of goals to defeat Richmond Kickers Future 2-0 and clinch the 2008 James River Cup title.
Hampton Roads took 11 shots and four corner kicks, putting on strong offensive pressure. The attack led to two goals, one in each half. Tom Woollard scored both of Hampton Roads’ goals.
Woollard put the Piranhas on the board first in the 29th minute with an assist from Roberto Sgueglia. The Future held the Piranhas to only a 1-0 lead most of the match, but Woollard found the back of the net again in the 79th minute, making it the final goal of the game.
Despite the two goals, Future’s keeper Andrew Dykstra made four saves while Future’s defense caught the Piranhas offsides a total of five times. The Future tallied nine shots and four corner kicks. Six of Richmond’s shots came from Boris Gatzky and David Rosenbaum who had three each.
