Kickers Host Charleston For Military Appreciation Day This Memorial Day

RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, May 25, 2005) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to host Southern rivals Charleston Battery this Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium for a Military Appreciation Day.  All active duty military, reservists and veterans are invited to attend the match for free (Military I.D. required). 

The Kickers last met the Battery in Charleston on August 6, 2004, winning the 2004 series with a 2-1-1 record, boosting the all-time series record to 16-14-3.  The 2003 USL First Division Champion Charleston is currently in ninth place in the USL standings with a record of 1-4-2, 7 points while Richmond continues to sit atop the table with a 7-1-1 record for 22 points.  Last weekend, the Kickers defeated the Minnesota Thunder, 3-1 at home while the Battery dropped a 4-0 decision to Vancouver on the road on May 15th.  Charleston was idle last weekend.  The Battery will host the Atlanta Silverbacks this Saturday, prior to the Memorial Day match-up in Richmond.

“The Battery/Kickers matches produce intense rivalry, in which the players always relish taking part,” comments Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw.  “We are anxious to play again after a nine-day layoff.”  

Players To Watch:
Kickers:  Richmond forward Matthew Delicâte is tied for first in the league with 14 points and second in goals with six after recording a goal and an assist in the 3-1 win over Minnesota last weekend, for which he earned USL First Division Team of the Week honors for the third time this season.  Rookie midfielder Sascha Görres earned Team of the Week honors for the first time, contributing to the 3-1 win over the Thunder with a goal and an assist.  Now tied for sixth in the league in points (6), midfielder Mike Burke continues to turn on the heat after recording his third goal in three games with the game-winner last weekend.  Goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale leads the league with a goals against average of 0.77 and seven goals against. 

Battery: Former Kickers forward and 2004 Battery leading scorer Greg Simmonds tallied a pair of goals, which led to the Battery’s first win of the season over Toronto on May 6th. He is currently leading Charleston with two goals for four points, tied with rookie forward Alon Lubezky, an Israeli U17 International and product of the University of Hartford.  Midfielder Chris Goos has recorded a goal and an assist so far this season while goalkeeper Chris Doyle is ranked ninth in the league with 14 saves. A 2003 All-League Second Team selection, defender Alan Woods returns to the Battery after spending three seasons with the Atlanta Silverbacks.

Richmond Kickers Future and Destiny Update
An overall successful weekend for the Richmond Kickers Soccer Club, both the Richmond Kickers Future (PDL) and Richmond Kickers Destiny (W-League) found success in their season home openers. 

The Richmond Kickers Future kicked off the weekend with a 2-0 win over Mid-Atlantic Division rivals Williamsburg Legacy last Saturday.  Forward Cristian Neagu tallied the game-winner, his third goal of the season, firing a 35-yard blast into the back of the net.  Forward Drew Harrison was responsible for the second goal with an assist by Dominic Oduro

The Future will travel to Greensboro tonight to face the Carolina Dynamo and will return to Sports Backers Stadium on Friday, May 27th to take on the Raleigh CASL Elite at 7:00 p.m

 

The Richmond Kickers Destiny were equally successful, defeating the Northern Virginia Majestics 3-1, for their first win of the 2005 campaign.  2004 leading scorer Jenn Parsons, forward Missy Wycinsky and midfielder Harumi Someya notched goals for the Destiny. 

The Destiny head to North Carolina to take on Atlantic Division rival Carolina Dynamo Women on Friday, June 3rd before returning to Sports Backers Stadium on Sunday June 5th to host the Atlanta Silverbacks Women at 6:00 p.m.
