The Richmond Kickers are proud to send two teams to the upcoming Virginia Youth Soccer Association State Cup Finals as Andy McIntosh’s U15 Girls Elite and U18 Girls Elite advanced to the title match this weekend.
A back and forth affair saw the U15 Girls Elite through to the finals, as they defeated the Herndon Freedom 97 Girls 4-3 in the semifinal round. The Kickers took a deserved early lead when Virginia Jesselson cut inside her defender and beat the keeper. It looked like the game would be 1-0 at half time but Herndon notched the equalizer from a quick free kick in the 38th minute. Jesselson restored the lead in the second half, but again Herndon leveled the score to force extra time. The first 15 minutes of overtime was scoreless and penalty kicks were looming until the Kickers scored from a corner kick to make the game 3-2. Jesselson completed her hat trick to give the Kickers a 4-2 lead but a late goal by the Freedom made for a tense finish with Kickers holding on for the overtime victory. The U15 Girls are slated to face PWSI Courage 97 Girls Red in the Championship.
Qualifying for their seventh consecutive State Cup Final Four, the U18 Girls edged the Herndon Firecats 2-1 Saturday afternoon. Lizzy Patrick opened scoring early in the match before Tessa Broadwater notched the game-winner in the second half, leading the girls to a rematch of last year’s semifinal against the reigning U17 US National Champions VSA Heat Blue.
The Kickers narrowly missed sending all three teams to the finals as the U17 Girls Elite suffered a hard-fought 5-2 loss to the current National Champions BRYC 95 Elite.
The State Cup Finals will be held next Sunday, November 4th at River City Sportsplex in Richmond, VA.
