RICHMOND, VA – The Kickers got off to an early start against the Bermuda Hogges Saturday, July 11, and never looked back. Playing under the lights for a crowd of 2,464, the Kickers bettered their first-half tally from last week’s 3-0 win over the Charlotte Eagles, netting five goals in the opening 45 minutes. Reigning USL-2 Player of the Week David Bulow added his 8th and 9th tallies of the season either side of a headed Matthew Delicâte goal from a Mike Burke free kick. Burke went on an unassisted run to score the fourth goal of the half before Ben Hunter added the fifth just after the half hour mark. The Kickers and Hogges added two goals apiece in the second half to bring the final score to 7-2.

Richmond’s attacking flurry began from the outset, with Gerson dos Santos looking particularly dangerous in front of goal in the opening minutes. The Brazilian fired a shot from the top of the 18 that tested Hogges goalkeeper Jason Williams. The pressure mounted over the next couple minutes and, despite a number of saves by Williams, the Kickers got on the scoresheet in the 8th minute courtesy of a Bulow strike. Left back Sascha Görres made a long run to the edge of the Hogges box and sent in a low cross for Richmond’s number ten, who was waiting at the penalty spot to put the ball into the far corner.

The first real attacking threat for the Hogges came in the 9th minute as forward Domico Coddington dribbled to the byline before being shepherded out by dos Santos and Henry Kalungi. The Bermuda pressure was short-lived, however, as the Kickers pressed on to add two more goals in the space of a minute.

Delicâte was fouled on the edge of the area in the 13th minute by Hogges defender Darius Cox, who was shown a yellow card. On the resulting free kick, Burke played a curling ball into the box and Delicâte got the slightest of touches with his head to redirect into the back of the net. Just seconds after the restart, Bulow found himself in acres of space after a deflection off of a Bermuda defender. The striker sent a sublime chip over the outstretched fingers of the keeper to bring the score to 3-0.

Richmond settled into a spell of possession until Burke played a ball through for Bulow in the 26th minute. The striker was in an offside position, but left the ball for Burke to run back onto. The midfielder took advantage of the situation, running past the off-guard defenders and into the box before shooting past the Hogges keeper for 4-0.

The Hogges recorded their first shot on goal in the 30th minute, but Pascale got his hands to it to punch it for a corner. Seion Darrell added another shot, which Pascale saved and distributed quickly for a counter attack in the 32nd minute. The Kickers completed their first half scoring when Luke Vercollone switched the ball to a wide-open Ben Hunter, who had only the keeper to beat to bring the home team’s tally to five.

Bulow and Vercollone were replaced at the half by Chris Carrieri and Ross Mackenzie, respectively. The attacking onslaught continued after the second half, and within six minutes of coming on, Carrieri made his mark. The striker found the ball at his feet after Delicâte played him through, and beat Williams to the near post to bring the score to 6-0.

The game opened up after Carrieri’s strike, and Bermuda enjoyed a brief spell of possession that resulted in their first goal of the evening. In the 60th minute, Domico Coddington went on a mazy run into the Kickers box and went down at the feet of Henry Kalungi to earn a penalty. Lloyd Holder sent Kickers keeper Ronnie Pascale the wrong way to bring the score to 6-1. The Hogges built on the momentum from the goal and added a second in the 73rd minute courtesy of a header by Hogges substitute Jamie Smith. The Kickers struggled momentarily to hold off the Hogges’ advances and Kalungi was booked for a hard foul in the 77th minute.

The scoring still wasn’t done for the night, as another penalty was awarded in the 80th minute, this time to the Kickers. Delicâte was clean through on goal and brought down from behind just inside the penalty area. The striker notched his second on the night from the resultant penalty and brought the score to 7-2. The game continued at breakneck pace for the final ten minutes, with both sides coming close to sending the total goal scoring tally on the night into double digits.

The Kickers return to the University of Richmond Stadium on Saturday, July 25th as they take on Guatemalan champions CSD Comunicaciones. The historic international exhibition is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are on sale now via RichmondKickers.com.  The Kickers get back to regular season action on Saturday, August 1st when they host the Real Maryland Monarchs and Free Youth Night at 7:00 p.m.  Free youth tickets, courtesy of SCOR, Sports Center of Richmond, are available at the Kickers Front Office, SCOR, located at 1385 Overbrook Road, Richmond, or online via RichmondKickers.com.
