Richmond, VA – (Thursday, April 3, 2008) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce a partnership with Richmond’s new indoor sports facility, Sports Center Of Richmond (SCOR). The new partnership will facilitate the addition of a Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL) indoor soccer franchise under the Kickers player development umbrella.
“This is great news for our fans as they can now support the Kickers all year round,” comments Leigh Cowlishaw, Vice President of Soccer Programs and Head Coach. “Indoor soccer is highly entertaining and the fans will be treated to a unique real close up of the action. I attended a few games last season and was impressed with the fast paced entertainment. I know our fans will enjoy it immensely and as always we look forward to producing a championship caliber team.”
The Kickers will take over the operations for the existing Richmond indoor soccer franchise, which competed in the PASL during the 2007/2008 season. Richmond Kickers Indoor will consist mostly of Kickers professionals plus select amateur players and will take the field during the 2008/2009 season. Competing in the Mid-Atlantic division, Richmond Kickers Indoor will face regional opponents such as Fredericksburg Generals and Virginia Legacy. The official name, coaching staff, schedule and ticket information has not yet been disclosed.
“The owners and management of SCOR are very excited to be a small part of professional soccer in our community,” adds Mark Grossman, Owner. “SCOR’s customers come from a wide range of youth soccer clubs, adult soccer clubs, and other sports and entertainment organizations from all over the Richmond Metropolitan area. There is only one professional soccer team in town, however, and the Kickers have consistently been one of the best franchises in the United Soccer League for 15 years. We really look forward to offering our members, current Kicker fans, and Richmonders the opportunity to take in the great game of Indoor Soccer with such a quality organization as the Kickers.”
SCOR, the official indoor training facility of the Kickers professional USL2 team and home of the Richmond Kickers Indoor Team, will also host several weeks of Richmond Kickers summer camps, adding another facet to an already wide-ranging program of camp opportunities. Additionally, SCOR is sponsoring the Kickers’ annual Free Youth Night, providing 25,000 free tickets to area children ages 3-17 to the Kickers home game on Saturday, May 31st versus the Wilmington Hammerheads.
