Richmond, VA After a one-hour lightning delay, the Richmond Kickers clinched a Fourth Round MLS match up with the highest-scoring game in Kickers history and an 8-4 victory over the Ocean City Barons of the Premier Development League. The Barons were the first to put points on the board during tonights high-scoring affair in the 4th minute but the Kickers rallied back to equalize eight minutes later. A hat-trick by Richmond forward McColm Cephas and four assists by midfielder Sascha Gorres led to the outcome, which guarantees the Kickers match versus D.C. United (MLS) on Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium.
A first half jam-packed with scoring opened tonights U.S. Open Cup Third Round match. A fourth minute Byron Carmichael goal by Ocean City released a wave of scoring, which preceded three consecutive Richmond goals in next three minutes.
In the 12th minute, Kickers defender Peter Luzak received a cross at the penalty mark off of a Sascha Gorres free kick and redirected it into the far post of the net for the equalizer. Soon after, Richmond forward McColm Cephas recorded his first professional hat trick, tallying three goals in 14 minutes. Cephas broke the ice in the 13th minute with his first goal of the season, with a header at the eight yard mark from a Gorres cross. Two minutes later, duplicated his effort with a similar play, this time off a cross from Mike Burke.
Carmichael answered back in the 41st minute with his second goal of the night, winning the ball in the air off of a Tony Donatelli corner kick, cutting the deficit to two. The scoring barrage continued in the second half when the Barons slashed the Kickers lead to one goal after the re-start when Carmichael drew a foul in the box. Donatelli took the resulting penalty kick in the 54th minute and blasted the ball past Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale for the Barons third goal of the night, seventh overall.
After a series of shots and a goal annulled due to an offside call, Kickers forward Kevin Jeffrey was responsible for getting the Kickers back on the scoreboard with Richmonds fifth goal in the 69th minute. Gorres notched his fourth assist of the night when his corner kick was cleared back to him deep on the right side. He curved the ball back into the box, which found Jeffrey who was able to strike the ball high into the left-hand corner of the net.
Richmond substitute forward Chris Carrieri was instrumental in the next three Kickers goals. Carrieri raced down the left flank, deftly beat two defenders and cut the ball back to Tim Brown who converted with a low strike in the 77th minute. Minutes later, Carrieri created another chance by getting behind the Barons defense once again, but this time his shot was saved by Barons goalkeeper Ryan Carr; however, the ensuing rebound was pushed over the goal line by defender Matt Bobo, increasing the Kickers lead to four. Carrieri then helped close out the scoring by setting up a Matthew Delicate goal, the eighth of the night in the 84th minute, seconds after Barons forward Michael Todd registered the fourth Ocean City goal, unassisted.
Setting a modern-era U.S. Open Cup record in addition to several club records including most goals in a match and most aggregate goals in a match, the Kickers will return to regular season play this Friday, July 22nd for a battle for first place against the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Currently tied for first in the USL First Division, the Kickers and the Rhinos will kickoff at 8:00 p.m., live on Fox Soccer Channel, at the University of Richmond Stadium.
