2008 SPRING RECREATION INFORMATION
Providence Middle School Program (Chesterfield)

2008  Fall Registration

Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club offers an excellent Recreation Soccer Program for all players U4 to U18. General information is provided when you click "learn more" or you may call 804.644.5425 ext. 313.

**For Chesterfield (Pocoshock) program new this Fall Season; ALL U8 and older teams are required to switch to the red and white uniforms.  The red jersey puchase price is $12.00 and must be purchased when the player is registered.  Gold jerseys will no longer be allowed in this program.  All of the RKYSC teams will be outfitted in our official colors; Red and White.**  Parents do not need to purchase the whte jersey if they already have one for their child.**

**Effective Fall 2008; a maximum of 5 players may be carried over from one year to another including the coaches child.  This is especially important as we move to continue to make our teams more balanced.  This requirement will affect certain age groups as numbers on rosters and sizes of division also play a role in this matter.  We have some divisions with 2 or 1 teams where this rule will not work. Our emphasis is continue to foster the club philosophy of becoming more of "We are part of the Kickers Club, rather than we are part of one team!"  Coaching requests will strictly be honored on a first come, first served and paid basis!**

What is recreation soccer?

Our Richmond Kickers recreation soccer program is designed to provide a safe, family friendly environment for children to learn about the beautiful game of soccer and have fun at the same time.  Recreation soccer is not about winning!  It is about the players learning positive life skills and making friends!  The emphasis is on participation.

What is different about the Kickers’ Recreation program?

The Richmond Kickers Youth Soccer Club is a member of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). A MAJOR emphasis throughout the Fall 2008 season and beyond will be placed on the life lessons learned within the program.

One of the points is the ELM tree of Mastery;  E is for effort:  L is for learning; and M is for mistakes.  Mistakes are O.K.;  we can learn to respond to mistakes positively!  ; www.positivecoach.org

We will HONOR the game through "ROOTS"; R= Rules:  Refusing to bend the rules to win, O=Opponents are a gift that bring out our best; O=Officials help make our game safe and they are not perfect nor are we; T=Teammates are fun to be with and we are committed to each other and support each other on and off of the field; S=Self; I will Honor the Game no matter what to keep my self respect!

When does it start and end?

The Fall 2008 season is scheduled to start in the beginning of September.  Practice fields are open mid August, and the first game will start around the 6th of September.  The season should end mid November.

Where does my child practice?

All practices are scheduled at Providence Middle School, 1312 Starlight Lane, Richmond, VA  23235.  The fields are behind the school.

Directions to Providence:- Midlothian Tnpk., (Rt. 60) west of Chippenham Pkwy., to left at Ruthers Rd. (Wendy’s on right). Second right on Marthaven Lane to right on Starlight. Fields are located behind the school.  Do not drive on the fields!

How many times a week will my child practice?

Most recreational teams practice one time a week.  All recreational teams are guaranteed 1 night of practice field location a week.  A 2nd night may be possible based on field availability.

What time is practice?

Most coaches set up practice times after work hours (i.e. starting anywhere from 5:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. and ending 1 to 1.5 hours after the start time.) The length of practice will depend on the coach.  Most coaches only practice an hour to an hour and ½.  Younger aged teams will have shorter practice times.

The Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors recently approved the National Background Check for those individuals associated with cosponsored youth leagues. (i.e coaches, board members, etc) Originally proposed and discussed in public hearings was all current approved background eligibility cards would expire in December 2004. However, what was approved is that all NEW coaches will be required to go through the new background check process, which includes fingerprinting.  All approved individuals will be sent a national background check card with an expiration date of three years. Current background check card holders may be selected for random background checks beginning July 2005. Those selected will be notified and will need to proceed through the fingerprinting process and once approved receive a new card. Within three years all coaches should have a new national background check card.

All new coaches and team managers will be required to go through the new national background check which will require coaches to submit in person a new application form, show a picture ID and be fingerprinted.

Coaches can also make an appointment with Human Resources department Monday-Friday 8:30 am-5:00 pm by calling 717-6325.

Background Check Sessions can be seen at this link:  http://www.co.chesterfield.va.us/BackgroundChecks/Policy.asp

What training is offered?

Training of u4, u5 and u6 aged players is different than the training of older players. The main difference between these age groups and U8 and older is the practice.  All U4, U5, and U6 aged players are encouraged to attend the 4 training sessions offered by our trainers.  The trainers will be teaching the players, the coaches and the parents what appropriate activities to conduct with children of that age.    When there is not a practice scheduled we will provide a game format for the players on their regular night of training for these age groups.  These games will be run by the parent/coach/volunteers.

Our trainers are “experts” in the area of modeling practices that are age appropriate and developmentally appropriate for the younger players.  The focus of these sessions are for the young ones to develop a sense of the ball, self awareness, and their body movements.  These young players need to develop a love for the game and the soccer ball!  The majority of the activities are focused on the ball.  It is imperative that parents and spectators understand the emphasis is not on “team work”, but rather on individual play and creativity!  Creative being loosely defined, here!  These children just want to run and kick which is exactly what we have them doing in the small sided games.  For more information directly from US Soccer click here!

What training is offered for U8 and older players?

In addition to your regularly scheduled practice with your team coach, we offer special skills training by top trainers/professional players FREE to our members.   This Spring 2008 we will offer four (4) sessions, dates and times to be determined.  All coaches and players should attend these sessions.

What do I need for my child to play?

  1. You will need to obtain shin guards for your child.  They are mandatory and must be worn underneath the socks.  The socks must cover the shin guard completely.
  2. You will need appropriate foot wear.  Soccer cleats are not mandatory.  The players can play and practice in regular tennis shoes, although preferably not white one as they get dirty very quickly!  Football and baseball cleats are NOT permitted!
  3. Your child may not wear earrings and jewelry during the game.  This includes “starter earrings”.
  4. Beads and beaded hair may impose a danger to the child (should they “head” the ball, ) and to fellow players, should they fall out and/or get swung around.  It is recommended you do not allow your child to bead their hair for a game.
  5. All players are encouraged to bring a ball and labeled water bottle to practice.

What size ball should I get for my child?

U4, U5, U6, & U8 use a size 3 ball
U10’s & U12’s use a size 4 ball
All ages older use a size 5 ball

When are the games?

All matches are scheduled on Saturdays. There may be a few situations where a make up match due to rain may be rescheduled during the week (this is not often nor is it guaranteed).   We are currently evaluating the option of some mid week games.

Where are the games played?

Home matches are played at Providence Middle School or A.M. Davis Elementary School.  Under 10 and older teams will be scheduled matches in the Cross Association League (Chesterfield United, MYSL, FC Richmond, Goochland, Amelia, and others.)
